{"id":100654,"date":"2025-10-03T06:45:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T06:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/100654\/"},"modified":"2025-10-03T06:45:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T06:45:07","slug":"doctor-suspended-abroad-was-still-licensed-in-ireland-investigation-finds-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/100654\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctor suspended abroad was still licensed in Ireland, investigation finds \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A doctor under investigation in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/norway\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/norway\/\">Norway<\/a> for lacking basic medical knowledge, including how to perform injections, was able to obtain a licence in Ireland and retain it for more than two years before being suspended by Irish authorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ophthalmologist Gavriel Simha Furedi obtained his Irish licence in January 2021 shortly after formal complaints were first made about him by colleagues in a Norwegian hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">He was suspended by Norwegian authorities in June 2021 and permanently struck off in that country in December 2021. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Norwegian medical authority found the doctor had \u201climited understanding\u201d of sterility procedures and that attempts to train him in administering injections \u201chave not been successful\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">He often misinterpreted scans, something which could result in permanent vision impairment, and did not understand \u201ccommon words and expressions that a doctor or patient is expected to know\u201d, it found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/10\/03\/doctor-suspended-abroad-was-still-licensed-in-ireland-investigation-finds\/irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/10\/03\/how-a-doctor-lacking-basic-skills-and-suspended-in-norway-maintained-a-licence-in-ireland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How a doctor lacking basic skills and suspended in Norway maintained a licence in Ireland<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">However, he remained able to practise medicine in Ireland until May 2023 when the Irish High Court issued an interim suspension order, internal documents show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">That suspension order remains, pending a full hearing. However,more than four years after complaints against the doctor were first upheld in Norway, Dr Furedi remains on the Irish register.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The Irish authorities have been unable to obtain certain documents relating to the case from their Norwegian counterparts. This is preventing them from progressing with a full fitness-to-practise hearing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Additionally, Dr Furedi remains free to practise in his native <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/romania\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/romania\/\">Romania<\/a>, where authorities have failed to take any action against him despite, according to documents, being notified of the case four years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Records show the ophthalmologist is practising in a clinic in the Romanian capital of Bucharest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/10\/02\/doctors-sanctioned-overseas-able-to-retain-licences-to-practice-in-ireland\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Doctors sanctioned overseas able to retain licences to practise in IrelandOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">It is not clear if Dr Furedi practised in Ireland after obtaining a medical licence here in January 2021. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/medical-council\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/medical-council\/\">Irish Medical Council<\/a> confirmed he is prohibited from practising but declined to answer further questions citing \u201can ongoing regulatory process\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The case was uncovered during an investigation by The Irish Times, the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project and 50 other media outlets around the world. The investigation found many doctors are easily able to obtain or retain a licence to practise in one country after being found guilty of serious medical misconduct in another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This includes doctors found to have engaged in sexual abuse of patients or found guilty of severe malpractice resulting in patient deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cases included 11 doctors who were sanctioned in the UK, including being struck off, and who remain on the Irish register with no public notice of their misconduct. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Another 16 cases were found of doctors sanctioned in Ireland who were able to continue working overseas without repercussions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish Medical Council has said proper procedures were followed in all cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Taoiseach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\">Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> expressed \u201cconcerns\u201d about the findings of The Irish Times investigation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Checks should take place to make sure medics applying to practise in Ireland had not been subject to sanctions or misconduct findings in other countries previously, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI think the medical council has a clear responsibility here. Systems have to be very robust and resilient in respect of tracking what\u2019s happening in other countries, particularly in United Kingdom or in European Union member states, or anywhere for that matter,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Stephen McMahon, chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-patients-association\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-patients-association\/\">Irish Patients Association<\/a>, said the investigation \u201cexposes a fundamental betrayal of patient trust\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under EU regulations patients have an \u201cexplicit right to information about healthcare providers\u2019 sanctions.
