{"id":100853,"date":"2025-10-03T09:12:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T09:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/100853\/"},"modified":"2025-10-03T09:12:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T09:12:07","slug":"doubts-over-reopening-of-bray-greystones-coastal-path-despite-promising-report-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/100853\/","title":{"rendered":"Doubts over reopening of Bray-Greystones coastal path despite promising report \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wicklow-county-council\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wicklow-county-council\/\">Wicklow County Council<\/a> has poured cold water on a consultants\u2019 report that found there are no big engineering obstacles to reopening the popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bray\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/bray\/\">Bray<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greystones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greystones\/\">Greystones<\/a> cliff walk. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The 7km coastal trail was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2024\/08\/03\/bray-greystones-cliff-walk-new-barriers-installed-blocking-access-to-route\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2024\/08\/03\/bray-greystones-cliff-walk-new-barriers-installed-blocking-access-to-route\/\">closed by the local authority<\/a> in early 2021 following significant erosion on the Greystones side of Bray Head and a rockfall on the Bray side. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A new report, commissioned from RPS consulting engineers by the council, found there were \u201ctried and tested\u201d ways of protecting against further rockfalls, while coastal erosion on the Greystones side could be avoided by rerouting part of the walk a few metres inland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The path, which offers sweeping cliffside views across the sea from Howth to Wicklow Head, previously attracted an estimated 350,000 visitors a year and generated an estimated annual local spend of \u20ac18.4 million, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2025\/06\/03\/closure-of-bray-greystones-cliff-walk-has-cost-the-economy-73m\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2025\/06\/03\/closure-of-bray-greystones-cliff-walk-has-cost-the-economy-73m\/\">study by the economist Jim Power<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In its assessment of the current state of the path, undertaken this summer, the consultants described the issues as minor. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/travel\/2024\/03\/30\/bray-greystones-cliff-walk-its-a-big-attraction-we-have-got-to-get-it-reopened\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">It&#8217;s a big attraction &#8211; we&#8217;ve got to get it reopened Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cThe cliff walk meets most of the requirements of the Walking Trails Criteria for Ireland. The majority of the criteria that it does not meet are minor, such as ensuring safe access, website updates, update and maintain information boards and signage, and to ensure a trail management plan with record keeping is generated,\u201d it said, adding that remedial measures could last 120 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">However, Wicklow County Council appears to have played down the prospects of an early reopening. Chief executive Emer O\u2019Gorman said the job \u201cwill involve securing funding to complete the necessary work, after which a pathway will be developed when deemed safe to do so\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The council has consistently said it would not reopen the walk until it secured finance from a range of agencies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms O\u2019Gorman said: \u201cIn the meantime, the walk remains closed due to safety concerns over the instability of the area, which represents a significant safety risk to the public.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2025\/06\/03\/closure-of-bray-greystones-cliff-walk-has-cost-the-economy-73m\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Closure of Bray-Greystones cliff walk has \u2018cost the economy \u20ac73m\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She reiterated that the council had identified an alternative route involving walking along the R761 Windgates road towards the top of Bray Head before cutting in to a route down to Bray seafront, bypassing the existing cliff walk. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">However, members of the campaign group Friends of the Cliff Walk have called on T\u00e1naiste and Wicklow TD Simon Harris to convene a meeting of the Cliff Walk Task Force that he set up last February to explore the issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cThis meeting should take place urgently, in our view,\u201d said the group\u2019s spokesman, Peter Murtagh. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cIt must hear, a) that the council accepts the report and b) has set a transparent timetable for the speedy implementation of the short-term measures outlined in the report that would allow for the official reopening of the walk.
