{"id":10105,"date":"2025-08-19T20:28:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T20:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/10105\/"},"modified":"2025-08-19T20:28:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T20:28:08","slug":"what-does-the-winner-get-and-what-must-she-do-during-her-years-reign-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/10105\/","title":{"rendered":"What does the winner get and what must she do during her year\u2019s reign? \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The winner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rose-of-tralee\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rose-of-tralee\/\">Rose of Tralee<\/a> will bag a list of lavish prizes, but the cherry on the cake must be the \u20ac25,000 travel bursary. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The winning Rose has a year to make the most of the fund and can decide how to spend it, although with stipulations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Organisers say the 2025 winner will use the money to represent the Rose of Tralee International Festival and help connect the global Irish community throughout the year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The ultimate itinerary is at the discretion of the winner \u2013 for example 2024 Rose Keely O\u2019Grady travelled to Chicago for St Patrick\u2019s Day, to Wellington for the New Zealand Irish Dance Championships and to Poland to volunteer at the Happy Kids Foundation orphanage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 2023 winner, New York Rose R\u00f3is\u00edn Wiley, used her fund to attend the ploughing championship. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Boasting perhaps the most intensive year of travel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/maria-walsh\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/maria-walsh\/\">Maria Walsh<\/a>, the 2014 Rose of Tralee who is now an MEP, worked five days a week in Philadelphia and flew back to Ireland every weekend from August 2014 to January 2015. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She also met former US president Barack Obama at the White House for St Patrick\u2019s Day in 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2025\/08\/19\/rose-of-tralee-review-yoga-with-dogs-on-national-tv-where-else-would-you-get-it\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rose of Tralee 2025 Review Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Current judge Dr Clare Kambamettu travelled to India twice during her tenure as reigning Rose of Tralee in 2010. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This year the winning Rose will also drive away from the competition in a new Kia Niro plug-in hybrid SUV worth more than \u20ac40,000. The only catch is she will have to give it back at the end of the 12 months. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Then there is an all-expenses-paid week-long trip around the Kingdom, with stops including Killarney and Dingle for her and a friend. The costs are covered by Kerry County Council, although it is unclear if she will have to perform Rose duties as part of this trip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 2025 winner will also receive complimentary accommodation for her and a friend at the Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee, every time she returns to the town during the year of her reign. It\u2019s the long days that are the hardest part of it.
