{"id":101775,"date":"2025-10-03T21:12:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T21:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/101775\/"},"modified":"2025-10-03T21:12:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T21:12:08","slug":"hamas-agrees-to-elements-of-ceasefire-plan-but-calls-for-more-negotiations-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/101775\/","title":{"rendered":"Hamas agrees to elements of ceasefire plan but calls for more negotiations \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-hamas-conflict\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-hamas-conflict\/\">Hamas<\/a> said on Friday it would agree to some aspects of US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s plan to end the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaza-strip\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaza-strip\/\">Gaza<\/a> war, including releasing hostages and handing over administration of the enclave, but that it would seek negotiations over many of its other terms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a copy of the statement seen by Reuters news agency, Hamas issued its response to Mr Trump\u2019s 20-point plan after the US president gave the Palestinian militant group until Sunday to accept or reject the proposal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump has not said whether the terms would be subject to negotiation, as Hamas is seeking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Notably, Hamas did not say whether it would agree to a stipulation that it disarm, a demand by Israel and the US that it has previously rejected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In its statement, Hamas said it \u201cappreciates the Arab, Islamic, and international efforts, as well as the efforts of US president Donald Trump, calling for an end to the war on the Gaza Strip, the exchange of prisoners, [and] the immediate entry of aid,\u201d among other terms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">It said it was announcing its \u201capproval of releasing all occupation prisoners \u2014 both living and remains \u2014 according to the exchange formula contained in  Mr Trump\u2019s proposal, with the necessary field conditions for implementing the exchange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But Hamas added: \u201cIn this context, the movement affirms its readiness to immediately enter, through the mediators, into negotiations to discuss the details.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The group said it was ready \u201cto hand over the administration of the Gaza Strip to a Palestinian body of independents [technocrats] based on Palestinian national consensus and supported by Arab and Islamic backing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Hamas\u2019 response to the proposal, which is backed by Israel as well as Arab and European powers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump\u2019s plan specifies an immediate ceasefire, an exchange of all hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, a staged Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas and the introduction of a transitional government led by an international body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Friday, Mr Trump said in a social media post that an agreement must be reached by 6pm on Sunday, Washington DC time (11pm Irish time). <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cIf this last chance agreement is not reached, all hell, like no one has ever seen before, will break out against Hamas,\u201d Mr Trump said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Egypt, Qatar and Turkey  held talks with Hamas leaders in Doha about the plan, reportedly exerting pressure for a response that would lead to an end to the war.
