Adam Douglas, a senior rare book specialist at Peter Harrington<\/a>, describes working in the rare books world as resembling detective work. “It’s working out what’s happened to this book, whose library it’s been in, who’s had it in the past,” he says. <\/p>\n

As with all good detective novels, determining the value of a book takes a few crucial steps. How rare, coveted and old the book is can all contribute to its overall value. <\/p>\n

So, before you take it for a professional appraisal, you might want to think about channelling your inner Sherlock Holmes. Here’s how to determine if the old book you’re holding onto could be worth a pretty penny. <\/p>\n

How to tell if an old book is valuable1. Is it in demand?<\/p>\n

To assess how valuable a book is, you\u2019ll need to judge the popularity of the title and the relative rarity of the edition. <\/p>\n

“It’s simple economics of supply and demand,” Bernard Shapero, CEO and Founder of Shapero Rare Books<\/a> explains. “You can have the rarest book in the world, but if no one wants it, it’s not worth anything,” he says. <\/p>\n

2. Check the condition<\/p>\n

    Missing pages, damaged covers and loose binding can all hinder a book’s overall sale price. If you have old books stacked away in the basement, Adam recommends taking them out at least once a year to check on them. <\/p>\n

    “Sometimes one of the worst things that can happen to books is damp,” he says. “You never know, it might become quite valuable one day.”<\/p>\n

      As far as valuing an old book goes, Adam tells us that whether it’s a first edition or not is one of the most important factors. Though publishers vary in how they indicate a book’s edition, if you turn to the copyright page (which is usually found on the back of the title page), you can often find the edition number. <\/p>\n

        When it comes to old books, dust jackets really matter. “Most books are about a fifth of the value without their dust jacket,” Adam says. <\/p>\n

        In the case of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Adam estimates that a dust jacket could mean the difference between $6,700 and $269,000. Definitely don’t throw out your dust jackets if you’re thinking of entering the collecting business. <\/p>\n

        5. Is there anything special about it?<\/p>\n

          Old books are not just appreciated for their literary value but for their historical significance. This means that if a book is dedicated to someone famous or signed by the author themselves, it can add to its value. <\/p>\n

          “You can have a very common book of no value, but if it was Winston Churchill’s copy, suddenly it becomes valuable,” Bernard says. Here, the provenance of a book really matters. <\/p>\n

          The value of a book is ultimately determined by these different factors coming together. Not all first editions are valuable, but if you have a first-edition copy of a sought-after title, you might just be in luck. <\/p>\n

          In most cases, the story of the book’s history has already been written into its pages. “Books will tell you what they are. So if you look at them, you can figure it out,” Adam says. <\/p>\n
