{"id":105044,"date":"2025-10-06T11:09:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T11:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/105044\/"},"modified":"2025-10-06T11:09:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T11:09:12","slug":"new-national-internet-upgrade-launched-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/105044\/","title":{"rendered":"New national internet upgrade launched in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies has upgraded its Broadband Infraco network through a partnership with Huawei.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Huawei\u2019s technology has seen the network\u2019s capacity jump from 100Gbps to 800Gbps.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The department will use the upgraded network for its SA Connect campaign, bringing free internet access to undeserved areas across the country.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A newly upgraded backbone internet network has been launched in South Africa through <a href=\"https:\/\/infraco.co.za\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Broadband Infraco<\/a> (BBI) and <a href=\"https:\/\/htxt.co.za\/topics\/huawei\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Huawei<\/a>, which will lower the cost of access of high capacity broadband internet to \u201cmillions of South Africans,\u201d the company says.<\/p>\n<p>The upgraded network will serve as the supporting network for the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT)\u2019s SA Connect initiative, which seeks to build 500 meter-wide internet hotspots in underserved areas across the country.<\/p>\n<p>BBI is a part of the department, whose Minister Solly Malatsi was at the launch of event of upgraded network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis upgrade delivers faster speeds, greater resilience, and open-access connectivity \u2013 a foundation that will power e-learning, fintech, AI and e-government,\u201d said the Minister in an X post about the launch event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this, we empower citizens to solve local problems, give SMMEs a platform to thrive, and ensure every learner and entrepreneur can connect reliably.<\/p>\n<p>BBI has used Huawei\u2019s next-generation Optical Cross-Connect (OXC) technology to deliver 800Gbps wavelengths across its network, increasing the amount of data than can be transferred on the network in real-time by a significant amount, it says.<\/p>\n<p>Previously the network\u2019s wavelength sat at 100Gbps, so the new upgrade brings eight times more capacity. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">[WATCH] We Are Here \u2014 the official launch of the Intelligent Backbone Network.<\/p>\n<p>A new era of connectivity begins as the network goes live, boosting capacity, connecting communities, and ensuring no one is left behind.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IntelligentBackbone?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#IntelligentBackbone<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FutureReady?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#FutureReady<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SouthAfricaConnected?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#SouthAfricaConnected<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/27XT53dR8U\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/27XT53dR8U<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Broadband Infraco (@bbinfraco) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bbinfraco\/status\/1973773038559862834?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">October 2, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The newly launched network is also slated to support a freshly laid BBI fibre route, connecting Johannesburg to the Kopfontein border post into Botswana, \u201cstrengthening high-speed cross-border connectivity across the SADC region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe backbone spans all nine provinces and extends to the borders with Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe, providing broad regional access,\u201d it explained in a Huawei press release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis partnership will create a foundation for widespread public sector digital transformation,\u201d said Will Meng, Huawei South Africa CEO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuawei is honoured to support this journey, and we remain fully committed to deepening our collaboration with BBI, from<br \/>intelligent optical technology to end-to-end services, ensuring this network doesn\u2019t just connect, but empowers,\u201d he added, explaining that the Chinese company is hoping to continue scaling its efforts alongside the department.<\/p>\n<p>[Image \u2013 Provided]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Get the tech news you want to read.
