The finding of a viable explosive device outside a Sinn F\u00e9in<\/a> office in Newry has been criticised as an \u201cattack on democracy\u201d.<\/p>\n

Northern Ireland\u2019s First Minister<\/a> and Sinn F\u00e9in vice-president Michelle O\u2019Neill<\/a> condemned it as a \u201ccowardly attack\u201d. The is office used by Newry and Armagh MP Daire Hughes and Stormont<\/a> MLA and Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is absolutely no place for this kind of behaviour in our society,\u201d said Ms O\u2019Neill. \u201cSinn F\u00e9in will not be deterred or intimidated from continuing our work to better the lives of people and communities across Newry, Armagh<\/a>, and Ireland.”<\/p>\n

Mr Hughes said he will not be deterred after the incident at the constituency office on Monaghan Street in the city.<\/p>\n

The alarm was raised just before midnight on Sunday. Army bomb experts attended the scene and made safe and removed the device, which has been described as a \u201cviable explosive device\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mr Hughes said it was a \u201cdisgraceful and cowardly attack on democracy and the community in Newry\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever was behind this attack, they will not succeed and we will not be intimidated,\u201d he told BBC Radio Ulster. \u201cWe will get back to the work that we have to do to represent the people of Newry and the office will be open for business this morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a massive shock, a disgraceful and cowardly attack on a constituency office which provides an essential service to the people of Newry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wider dimension to this is that this was an attack on democracy, an attack on Sinn F\u00e9in, but we\u2019ll not be intimidated, we will not be deterred, we will continue to do our work, we will continue to advance forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people responsible won\u2019t hold us back, won\u2019t bring us back and we\u2019ll continue to represent the community to the best of our ability without hesitation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Hughes called on people with any information about the incident to contact the PSNI as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

A police spokesperson said officers were grateful to local people for their patience while they worked to make the area safe.<\/p>\n
