{"id":105270,"date":"2025-10-06T15:04:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T15:04:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/105270\/"},"modified":"2025-10-06T15:04:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T15:04:07","slug":"irish-flotilla-detainees-deported-by-israel-amid-claims-of-violence-aggressive-treatment-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/105270\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish flotilla detainees deported by Israel amid claims of \u2018violence\u2019, aggressive treatment \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Sixteen Irish citizens detained by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a> during the interception of the global sumud flotilla have been released and \u201care on their journey home\u201d, the T\u00e1naiste <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\">Simon Harris<\/a> has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some of the Irish citizens have told lawyers representing them how they suffered \u201caggressive treatment and violence\u201d in Israeli custody, including being kicked when trying to sleep, and are now being kept in a notorious desert prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement on Monday afternoon, Global Movement to Gaza \u00c9ire said the \u201cIrish flotilla participants\u2019 flight has left Tel Aviv and will land in Athens, Greece, today [Monday]. Participants will then travel homeward on three separate flights from Athens to Dublin today and tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The detainees include Caitr\u00edona Graham, Sinn F\u00e9in Senator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/chris-andrews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/chris-andrews\">Chris Andrews<\/a>, Colm Byrne, Cormac O\u2019Daly, Diarmuid MacDubhghlais, Donna Schwarz, Louise Heaney, Maureen Almai, Paddy Kelly, Patrick O\u2019Donovan, Sarah Clancy, artist Tadhg Hickey, Tara O\u2019Grady, Tara Sheehy, and Thomas McCune. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A sixteenth member of the group, Michael Fix, is a dual Irish-US citizen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The statement said the vessels the activists were aboard as part of the flotilla were \u201cillegally intercepted in international waters\u201d and the people detained were \u201cillegally in one of the most infamous prisons for human rights abuses in Israel\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The first of three flights home for the activists is expected to land in Dublin at 10.45pm on Monday, with two more following on Tuesday at 3.30pm and early on Wednesday at 1am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/10\/03\/harsh-treatment-irish-aid-flotilla-detainees-kicked-cable-tied-in-israeli-custody\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Harsh treatment\u2019: Irish aid flotilla detainees \u2018kicked, cable-tied\u2019 in Israeli custodyOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Lawyers from Adalah, a legal centre that defends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/palestine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/palestine\/\">Palestinians<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\" target=\"_blank\">Israel<\/a>, have met and represented 10 out of the 16 detained Irish citizens since they were taken from their boats and brought to Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They were detained in Ktzi\u2019ot Prison, a large detention facility usually used for Palestinians, in the Negev desert, though it is unclear whether they are within the main jail or a separate part used for immigration cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The details of their<b> <\/b>alleged treatment were given to Adalah lawyers by Irish detainees while they were in Ashdod port and before their transfer to the prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSome of them reported minor violence, being kicked when trying to sleep, which is something that we\u2019ve seen with a few of them,\u201d said Miriam Azem of Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnother reported that they were tied with cables behind their back for a few hours. Another mentioned pushing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She declined to specify which of the Irish citizens had reported the ill-treatment, saying their details would be kept private until permission was explicitly given.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen microaggressions &#8230; aggressive treatment and violence,\u201d she said, in a phone interview from outside Ktzi\u2019ot Prison on Friday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Israel\u2019s foreign ministry has said all the detainees \u201care safe and in good health\u201d and they would be deported as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In all, Adalah lawyers managed to meet 331 participants of the flotilla out of more than 400 who were detained by Israeli authorities, which have prevented their attempt to breach a 17-year naval blockade on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaza-strip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaza-strip\/\">Gaza<\/a> with deliveries of humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Swiss and Spanish activists from the flotilla said they were subjected to inhumane conditions during their detention by Israeli forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Among nine members of the flotilla who arrived home in Switzerland, some alleged sleep deprivation, lack of water and food, as well as some being beaten, kicked, and locked in a cage, the group representing them said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An Israeli foreign ministry spokesperson rejected the allegations.<\/p>\n<p>Footage on social media appears to show Israeli security minister Ben Gvir shouting at flotilla campaigners detained by the Israeli military. Video: Push.il <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Spanish activists also alleged mistreatment on their arrival in Spain late on Sunday after being deported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey beat us, dragged us along the ground, blindfolded us, tied our hands and feet, put us in cages and insulted us,\u201d lawyer Rafael Borrego told reporters at Madrid\u2019s airport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Israel\u2019s minister of justice Yariv Levin said on Monday that 170 flotilla activists have been deported, and of the 309 still in custody in Israel 200 were expected to be expelled in the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Swedish activists on Saturday claimed that climate campaigner Greta Thunberg was shoved and forced to wear an Israeli flag during her detention, while others said they had clean food and water withheld and had their medication and belongings confiscated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Israel\u2019s foreign ministry has described widespread reports of detainees being mistreated after the flotilla was intercepted as \u201ccomplete lies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A spokesperson said over the weekend that all detainees were given access to water, food, and restrooms, adding: \u201cthey were not denied access to legal counsel and all their legal rights were fully upheld\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A Spanish detainee bit a woman medical worker at Ketziot Prison following a routine exam before her deportation, causing minor injuries treated on site, the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">On Sunday, the Swiss embassy in Tel Aviv visited the  10 Swiss nationals still being held in prison and said all were \u201cin relatively good health, given the circumstances\u201d.
