So here\u2019s what we know about the US labor market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m0d67001q27nr93wh5907@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On this particular Friday, at 8:30 a.m. ET, the Bureau of Labor Statistics was supposed to release the September jobs report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m0nj200043j6oj9lux82e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead, the agency behind the market-moving release \u2014 data that has starkly become even more important, given economic uncertainty \u2014 is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/01\/business\/401k-markets-economy-shutdown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">almost entirely dark<\/a> due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/government-shutdown-news-10-02-25\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">federal shutdown<\/a>. There will be no more employment data until the government is funded again.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m0nj200053j6ordt66j0k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the absence of official data, a constellation of previously reported federal data, private metrics, economists\u2019 analyses, Federal Reserve indicators and job seekers\u2019 lived experiences can help cobble together a rough snapshot of the current US labor market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m0nj200063j6o2ml6f0w8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s a look at what we know \u2014 and what we don\u2019t.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m0nj200083j6o976v4645@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Consensus estimates, according to financial data firm FactSet, are that the economy added 50,000 jobs in September, a pickup from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/05\/economy\/us-jobs-report-august-final\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">August\u2019s preliminary 22,000-job gain<\/a>, and the unemployment rate held pat at 4.3%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m0nj200093j6ohbdqncxd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Baked in to that estimate was an expectation that private-sector firms would add 62,000 jobs while the government (primarily the federal sector) would post a 12,000-job loss.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-2235423793.jpg\" alt=\"Pedestrians near the Capitol in Washington, DC, on September 17.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m0nj2000a3j6o2a4e8404@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wage growth and the average workweek (a metric watched to gauge whether hours are being cut) were expected to be unchanged from August, when pay gains rose 0.3% monthly and 3.7% annually and the average workweek was 34.2 hours.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m0nj2000b3j6ohjwxic3d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019ve seen the story last year, where you had a very weak summer of hiring and then hiring picked up again a bit in September,\u201d Brett Ryan, senior US economist at Deutsche Bank, told CNN this week. \u201cI expect something similar, but not nearly as much of a bounce-back as last year.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m0nj2000c3j6o7oblyhgo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In September 2024, the US added 240,000 jobs \u2014 a robust increase that pretty much matched the entire gains of June, July and August (when job growth averaged 82,000 per month).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m0nj2000d3j6ow4oca4vx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hiring is considerably weaker this year. During the past three months, job growth has averaged 29,333 jobs per month. The makeup of the US labor force also has changed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m0nj2000e3j6okfugn9xm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US unemployment rate can hold steady even the country adds fewer jobs than last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/04\/economy\/us-jobs-report-august-preview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">economists say<\/a>, noting more<strong> <\/strong>people aging out of the workforce, a rise in discouraged job seekers, a reduced flow of immigrants and rising deportations of workers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m0nj2000f3j6onn40xs5k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLast year, it probably took about 130,000 (jobs) per month to keep the unemployment rate steady; this year, it\u2019s probably more like 50,000 or below,\u201d Ryan said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m0kie00003j6ox0onyxo5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s still not clear how much of the recent labor market slowdown can be attributed to lower immigration, JPMorgan economist Abiel Reinhart wrote earlier this week, noting a sudden loss of such labor could boost openings in affected industries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m5dne000r3j6o8by54qx8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey report for August, which was released on Tuesday, showed that construction job openings were nearly halved, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/30\/economy\/us-jolts-job-openings-layoffs-turnover-august\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plunging by 115,000 roles \u2014 the second-largest drop on record<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m69zz000u3j6o9tjqt70t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis could also reflect underlying business challenges in that sector,\u201d Reinhart noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9m9t95000x3j6ooxrlnybr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Construction, which is closely watched as an indicator of economic activity, has been dogged by a combination of high interest rates, a persistent housing affordability crisis, deportations of workers and tariff-related uncertainty.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9mamss00103j6okz7zytvr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The foreign-born labor force has declined after peaking earlier this year, BLS data shows. However, the drop-off could also be attributed to people refusing to answer surveys or not indicating their nativity status, economists note.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9miaj500163j6ovhkrcmgm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even without the official September jobs data, industry-specific trends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/06\/economy\/us-jobs-report-impacts-americans\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that showed up in the August report<\/a> and for much of this year are expected to continue.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9mk5xt001b3j6ojvqqclmg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Health care, which has contributed the lion\u2019s share of overall job growth this year, likely continued driving employment gains in September.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9tyutq000o3j6qdip8jw8r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s what the industry breakdown looked like in August:\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9njaxh001h3j6og39db4hp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHealth care has been one of the stalwarts of the labor market \u2026 the need for health care has grown as the population ages,\u201d Nela Richardson, chief economist at payroll giant ADP, said Wednesday. \u201cAbout 10,000 individuals turn retirement age every day in the United States; that adds up to about 4 million retirements every year.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9nkah8001k3j6oosovk19v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            ADP\u2019s monthly snapshot of private-sector employment, which was released Wednesday, showed that health services and education added the most jobs in September, as employment slumped elsewhere. ADP estimated that private-sector businesses lost 32,000 jobs in September because of ongoing uncertainty as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/01\/economy\/adp-private-jobs-report-september\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">preliminary data revision<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9otjz7001n3j6o9mnekltr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a low-hire, low-fire market with few options for workers \u2014 especially those in white-collar industries \u2014 health care is becoming an attractive option.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9p06s7001t3j6oufuez9jp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sarah Loyd, a single mother with two degrees, has been in and out of the labor force for the past four years. Jobs have been increasingly harder to come by in her field of marketing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9p2p5w001x3j6o5ivf5ft3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m sending out emails to schools now to get back into school to pivot into health care \u2014 just to find any semblance of stability,\u201d Loyd, 35, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9p5kc200233j6ozos62rp5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, the lack of broad-based employment gains makes the US even more vulnerable to a shock, economists warn.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Months and months to find work<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9p3uab00203j6op8liy0cy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hiring activity has been listless this year, and the latest data isn\u2019t showing much of a turnaround.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9pk97q002f3j6o8suf4ver@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In September, a month when<strong> <\/strong>businesses\u2019 job boards are typically filled with seasonal postings, hiring announcements were the weakest in more than a decade, according to new data Thursday from Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9pmh27002i3j6ojejgrzan@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Layoff activity thankfully doesn\u2019t seem to be accelerating, but those who are unemployed are having a really hard time getting back into the workforce.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9pnf15002l3j6ofd76we4c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Continuing jobless claims, which are submitted by people who have filed for at least a week or more of unemployment, have been hovering at around four-year highs, Department of Labor data shows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9pp31x002r3j6o81u65he8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And in the August jobs report, 25.7% of unemployed people were actively job seeking for at least 27 weeks. Outside of the pandemic years, that\u2019s the highest share for that duration since June 2016, BLS data shows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9tpyww00083j6qu8it9b94@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among the bevy of regional Fed data, a new index from the Chicago Fed indicated similar unemployment activity as seen in August.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9tqb0q000c3j6qiou1cwzr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Chicago Fed Real-Time Unemployment Rate Forecast, updated this week, projected an unemployment rate of 4.34% for September (up a hair from 4.32% in August); a rate of 2.1% for layoffs and other separations (roughly unchanged from 2.09%); and a rate of 45.22% for hiring of unemployed workers (a slip from 45.61%).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9tsgpo000f3j6qni8yspsf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A separate new indicator from the San Francisco Fed showed that state-level unemployment is still largely under control.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9tu2x3000i3j6q0du5k93z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As of mid-September, only seven states\u2019 unemployment rates increased at least 0.5 percentage points above their prior 12-month lows, according to the Weekly Labor Market Stress Indicator.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9tvrq4000l3j6q8c2unmkh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The current suite of non-federal labor market data paints a mixed picture, but one with some bright spots.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9sklm1001b3j6pkqc3bh59@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For example, ZipRecruiter\u2019s recent employer surveys support the longstanding idea that there is pent-up demand just simmering beneath the surface.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9sll4o001e3j6pwzqleecz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAll of these data points say that the majority of businesses plan to increase hiring in the next 12 months, which is encouraging,\u201d Nicole Bachaud, ZipRecruiter\u2019s labor economist, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9so4lh001h3j6pga4pmq9b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On main street America, the September employment trends \u2014 including workforce participation, hours worked and wages \u2014 are generally in line with where they\u2019ve been in recent years, said Raymond Sandza, vice president of analytics and data at small business payroll company Homebase.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9ticr200003j6qh5wvd0hs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At a time when economic anxiety is high, stable\u2019s not too shabby.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg9tl2vz00023j6q1cdkwqbl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s nothing stark, nothing out of the ordinary,\u201d Sandza said. \u201cThat said, things have not felt great for Main Street for the last three or four years.
