{"id":106533,"date":"2025-10-07T09:43:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T09:43:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/106533\/"},"modified":"2025-10-07T09:43:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T09:43:08","slug":"barry-cowen-calls-for-full-and-frank-review-of-ff-candidate-selection-process-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/106533\/","title":{"rendered":"Barry Cowen calls for \u2018full and frank review\u2019 of FF candidate selection process \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Key Reads <\/p>\n<p>Sarah Burns &#8211; 1 minute ago<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \"><b>\u2018There is a lot of pressure on Miche\u00e1l Martin\u2019 <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Dr Kevin Cunningham, founder of Ireland Thinks opinion polls, has said there is \u201ca lot of pressure\u201d on Taoiseach and Fianna F\u00e1il leader Miche\u00e1l Martin following Jim Gavin\u2019s abandoned presidential campaign. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">He said the \u201cdisquiet\u201d surrounding his leadership has been ongoing for \u201cmany years\u201d but pointed to the fact he still remains the most popular political leader in the country, despite his approval rating declining over recent months. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Speaking on RT\u00c9 radio\u2019s Morning Ireland, Dr Cunningham also said he believed that Gavin\u2019s campaign wasn\u2019t \u201cnecessarily over\u201d following his disappointing polling over the weekend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The Sunday Independent\/Ireland Thinks poll, published on Sunday, suggested a sizeable lead for Catherine Connolly, putting her on 32 per cent, Fine Gael\u2019s Heather Humphreys on 23 per cent and Gavin on 15 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Dr Cunningham added that presidential election campaigns are \u201cincredibly volatile\u201d and Gavin would have been better suited in a mayoral campaign. Dr Cunningham said the presidential campaign was not \u201ca particularly good fit\u201d for the former Dublin GAA manager. <\/p>\n<p>Sarah Burns &#8211; 42 minutes ago<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \"><b>Very painful and difficult decision for Jim Gavin, says Miche\u00e1l Martin <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Taoiseach and Fianna F\u00e1il leader Miche\u00e1l Martin has defended his handling of the Jim Gavin controversy, saying he wanted to acknowledge that \u201cmembers of the party are hurting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Speaking on RT\u00c9 last night, Martin said Fianna F\u00e1il had conducted a \u201cvery comprehensive due diligence\u201d before Gavin was selected as its candidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cWe knew he was a landlord,\u201d he said, adding that the party had asked Gavin, \u201cIs there anything in your life that we need to know? Video: Dan Dennison <\/p>\n<p>Sarah Burns &#8211; 2 hours ago<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">The advantage seems to have shifted very much in the direction of Catherine Connolly, writes Harry McGee in this morning\u2019s political digest. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">He says having covered budget\u2019s for the past 20 years, he can\u2019t remember one being overshadowed to such an extent by another domestic political story. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free b-it-article-body__text--left\">The full digest can be read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/07\/how-to-budget-for-jim-gavins-failure\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/07\/how-to-budget-for-jim-gavins-failure\/\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Sarah Burns &#8211; 2 hours ago<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \"><b>MEP Barry Cowen calls for \u2018full and frank review\u2019 <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Fianna F\u00e1il MEP Barry Cowen is calling for a \u201cfull and frank review\u201d of the process through which the party decided on a candidate for the presidential election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free b-it-article-body__text--left\">Cowen told RT\u00c9 radio\u2019s Morning Ireland that he had not been satisfied with the lack of transparency and structure in the process in the months leading up to the decision, <b>Vivienne Clarke<\/b> reports. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cThere was little transparency or structure, the leadership seemed to believe from the outset that no current or former Fianna F\u00e1il TD or minister, for example, could come forward and could win, so they looked outside, but there has to be a proper open and robust process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cI would hope that a recommendation would also emanate from such a meeting tomorrow night to make recommendations to an Ard Feis for a more inclusive process that allows councillors and party members the opportunity to engage in a procedure and a process and own the resulting nomination, which wasn\u2019t the case this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Cowen said he understood Miche\u00e1l Martin\u2019s wish to \u201creach beyond the party base\u201d, but in doing so he \u201cmay have lost sight of the talent and the experience already within Fianna F\u00e1il and the benefits that would accrue as part of nominating from within. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cIt was always going to be harder, for example, to motivate the grassroots for someone that the party was less familiar with. So when a contest did finally emerge between Billy Kelleher and Jim Gavin, what really disappointed me personally was the rush to engage in a public tally of counter-parliamentary voting intentions in the media before the actual meeting took place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Cowen said he had voted for Billy Kelleher having worked closely with the Cork MEP for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cI knew that his ability to engage with the public, to handle scrutiny, clearly articulate his ideas and those of the party. I didn\u2019t know Jim Gavin personally, he came highly recommended, as has been alluded to, fine credentials in relation to his time in the GAA with the defence forces, his charity work. Photograph: Alan Betson \/ The Irish Times<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Cowen said the issue of timelines in the Jim Gavin case, \u201cwho knew what and when\u201d was concerning and something that he expected to be scrutinised and interrogated by a committee that would be set up as a result of the parliamentary party meeting on Wednesday night. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Recommendations would then be sent to the parliamentary party on what actions, if necessary, should be taken, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">When asked who he would not vote for in the presidential election, Mr Cowen said: \u201cI respect Catherine Connolly\u2019s authenticity, for example, her willingness to articulate a vision, something that might be lacking in recent times in politics to tell the truth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cBut I fundamentally disagree with her on issues that are vital to Ireland\u2019s place in the world and a role in Europe and international trade and diplomacy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cThe President represents Ireland internationally and comments such as hers that she\u2019s made in recent times can undermine their partners.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Cowen said he would be voting for Heather Humphreys, but would not be recommending or expect other members of Fianna F\u00e1il to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Burns &#8211; 2 hours ago<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Good morning.
