Below, we\u2019ve compiled a list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/5-guitar-riffs-that-summed-up-an-entire-era-of-alt-rock\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">alt-rock songs<\/a> from the past few decades that are secretly about other rockers, whether it be directly or slightly more indirectly\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Fall Out Boy \u2013 \u201cThis Ain\u2019t a Scene, It\u2019s an Arms Race\u201d is apparently about The Killers<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755658088_707_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p>On their third studio album, Infinity on High, Chicago\u2019s own Fall Out Boy delivered a pop-rock anthem with \u201cThis Ain\u2019t a Scene, It\u2019s an Arms Race,\u201d which bassist and songwriter Pete Wentz has said was a \u201ckind of a tongue-in-cheek look at the way we are so addicted and obsessed with new arts, cultures and loves \u2014 to the point where it just becomes oversaturated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s maybe also about Brandon Flowers of The Killers?<\/p>\n<p>It all seems to have started when Flowers was quoted as saying that Fall Out Boy makes music that could have an impact \u201cthat you don\u2019t really want,\u201d whatever that means. Wentz responded a couple of times, seemingly taking the jab in stride, but then this song emerged, and people began to take notice of the concepts of using war analogies to talk about beefs within the music industry.<\/p>\n<p>The rumors have only been exacerbated by the fact that the bands were label mates on Island Records at the time.<\/p>\n<p>R.E.M. \u2013 \u201cThe Wake Up Bomb\u201d is Probably about Liam Gallagher from Oasis<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755658088_935_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Back in the mid-\u201990s, Oasis\u2019s Gallagher brothers pissed off just about everybody with their abrasive personalities and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/noel-gallagher-hated-kendrick-lamars-super-bowl-halftime-show-absolute-nonsense\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unfiltered opinions<\/a>. This may have led to the song \u201cThe Wake Up Bomb\u201d by R.E.M.<\/p>\n<p>The two bands played together a couple of times, and while R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck <a href=\"https:\/\/stason.org\/TULARC\/music-bands\/r.e.m.\/22-Is-the-song-The-Wake-Up-Bomb-about-the-band-Oasis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">claims it\u2019s not<\/a>, fans have mined the lyrics to find many parallels that seem to reference Oasis, such as a line where R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe sings \u201csupersonic, what a joke.\u201d This, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/rem\/comments\/1f5jk9t\/the_wake_up_bomb_and_oasis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">online music sleuths<\/a> say, is referring to Oasis\u2019 1994 song \u201cSupersonic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pavement \u2013 \u201cRange Life\u201d is Definitely about Billy Corgan<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755658088_603_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p>OK, so to be fair, this one isn\u2019t really a \u201csecret,\u201d but godamn is it funny.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the early \u201990s, Pavement\u2019s brand of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/if-i-was-making-the-soundtrack-for-a-90s-grunge-teen-movie-these-5-songs-would-be-must-haves\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nonchalant indie rock<\/a> was burning up the underground and bringing them to the mainstream surface, but it became clear this was not the path they desired, and they made that clear in the song \u201cRange Life,\u201d from their 1994 album Crooked Rain Crooked Rain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins \/ Nature kids, I \/ They don\u2019t have no function \/ I don\u2019t understand what they mean \/ And I could really give a fuck,\u201d sings Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus, specifically name-dropping Billy Corgan\u2019s iconic grunge band.<\/p>\n<p>While Pavement went on record as saying the diss was just meant as a joke, rumors have it that Corgan was so pissed off, he had the band blacklisted from Lollapalooza \u201994.<\/p>\n<p>Smashing Pumpkins \u2013 So many songs about Courtney Love (allegedly), but we\u2019re gonna focus on \u201cZero\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPlay video<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755658088_361_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Play\"\/><\/p>\n<p>And finally, from a song about Corgan, to one(s) written BY Corgan!<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, it\u2019s been rumored that many Smashing Pumpkins songs are about Courtney Love. The Hole frontwoman, and Kirk Cobain\u2019s widow, and Corgan have had a relationship that is sometimes amicable and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/billy-corgan-is-trying-to-win-handwritten-lyrics-for-a-hole-song-that-might-be-about-him\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sometimes tumultuous<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most specifically, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/SmashingPumpkins\/comments\/13izdse\/zero_the_song_and_courtney_love\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">fans have noticed<\/a> that there are a lot of aspects of Smashing Pumpkins\u2019 hit song \u201cZero\u201d and Hole\u2019s tune \u201cMiss World,\u201d including the music video for \u201cMiss World\u201d featuring a backdrop that reads \u201cCleanliness is next to godliness,\u201d which is famously referenced in the lyrics of \u201cZero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, to be clear, Corgan has <a href=\"https:\/\/faroutmagazine.co.uk\/songs-written-about-courtney-love-smashing-pumpkins-gwen-stefani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">mostly denied<\/a> that any of his songs are about or were inspired by Love, but she has said that she very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/courtney-love-billy-corgan-smashing-pumpkins-6281713\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">firmly believes<\/a> a number of them actually are.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"We all love a good mystery in music, especially when that mystery has lore to it.
