But they\u2019re not the only ones doubtful that new graduates are ready to launch their white-collar careers\u2014even the young talent are skeptical of their own readiness. Less than a quarter, 24%, of Gen Z say their generation is prepared to begin working. Millet says that it may be tempting to pin the issue on AI. While there are issues surrounding the advanced tech sweeping entry-level roles, the young digital natives are better prepared than most to adapt skill-wise. The real culprit of this workplace readiness issue is the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/02\/gen-z-graduates-linkedin-ceo-college-degrees-future-of-work-ai-skills-hiring-career-advice\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/02\/gen-z-graduates-linkedin-ceo-college-degrees-future-of-work-ai-skills-hiring-career-advice\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">eroding value of<\/a> U.S. college degrees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo hear Gen Z say the same thing is a collective loss of confidence in [the] college degree. I think that\u2019s the continuation of a trend that is really pronounced,\u201d Millet continues. \u201cI feel like it\u2019s really only a crisis in the U.S. and it\u2019s because the relative value of the college degree is just plummeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While office employees are feeling the pinch\u2014with Anthropic CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/01\/dario-amodei-outrageous-lie-jensen-huang-anthropic-nvidia-regulation\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/01\/dario-amodei-outrageous-lie-jensen-huang-anthropic-nvidia-regulation\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dario Amodei<\/a> even <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/28\/anthropic-ceo-warning-ai-job-loss\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/28\/anthropic-ceo-warning-ai-job-loss\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">predicting that<\/a> 50% of all white-collar roles will be wiped out in the next five years\u2014frontline workers are buoyed in the jobs armageddon. That\u2019s because they chase <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/09\/six-figure-jobs-no-college-degree-install-elevators\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/09\/six-figure-jobs-no-college-degree-install-elevators\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">careers that don\u2019t require<\/a> college diplomas, which can be <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/05\/gen-z-ditching-college-trade-jobs-office-admin-safest-bet-non-grads\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/05\/gen-z-ditching-college-trade-jobs-office-admin-safest-bet-non-grads\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more immune to<\/a> newfound labor market challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI is probably not helping\u2026If you think about college grads and the lack of employment opportunities in that generation, yes, they\u2019re trying to enter industries where hiring rates are just very muted right now,\u201d Millet explains. \u201cBut I can tell you that in the U.S., Gen Z who are going into frontline roles are not experiencing these challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A \u2018crisis of confidence\u2019 in college degrees and push towards skill-based hiring<\/p>\n<p>Gen Z have been <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/20\/gen-z-regrets-going-to-college\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/20\/gen-z-regrets-going-to-college\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">second-guessing their<\/a> choice to go to college for years. As <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/06\/25\/parents-retirement-second-jobs-afford-college\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/06\/25\/parents-retirement-second-jobs-afford-college\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tuition soars to unaffordable highs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/03\/trump-student-loan-changes-grad-plus-elimination-gen-z-financial-reckoning\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/03\/trump-student-loan-changes-grad-plus-elimination-gen-z-financial-reckoning\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">student debt sinks<\/a> generations of graduates, and the skills landscape changes rapidly, they\u2019re worried that their degrees which once promised six-figure success will be made redundant. We\u2019re already seeing that with <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/14\/software-engineer-replaced-by-ai-lost-six-figure-salary-800-job-applications-doordash-living-in-rv-trailer\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/14\/software-engineer-replaced-by-ai-lost-six-figure-salary-800-job-applications-doordash-living-in-rv-trailer\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">software engineers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/09\/14\/ai-engineers-consultant-premium-enterprise-data-integration-high-pay-llms-big-four\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/09\/14\/ai-engineers-consultant-premium-enterprise-data-integration-high-pay-llms-big-four\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">consultants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a perfect storm,\u201d Millet says. \u201cYou\u2019re having [employers] drop degree requirements at the same time you have an oversupply of college grads, a crisis of confidence in what the degree actually means in terms of workforce readiness, and that\u2019s being internalized by the people with the degrees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plummeting value of college degrees is even more pronounced when it comes to what industries are actually looking to grow. Less than half of all hiring professionals expect to hire more in 2026, according to the Criteria report, but it varies depending on sector. About 68% of hiring managers at staffing\/recruiting businesses, 59% at health companies, 57% at manufacturing firms, and 50% at transportation and logistics agencies plan to hire more next year. Meanwhile, industries like technology, finance, and non-profit are anticipating to hire less than the average employer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sectors like healthcare, manufacturing, and transportation are facing staffing shortages\u2014and many can be filled by talent <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/31\/gen-z-eyeing-secure-healthcare-jobs-ai-proof-careers-but-chiropractors-doctors-and-paramedics-are-the-unhappiest-workers-hospitality-happiest\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/31\/gen-z-eyeing-secure-healthcare-jobs-ai-proof-careers-but-chiropractors-doctors-and-paramedics-are-the-unhappiest-workers-hospitality-happiest\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">without expensive college degrees<\/a>. Millet also says that employers across the board, regardless of industry, are leaning in on skills-based hiring.
