{"id":107106,"date":"2025-10-07T18:14:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T18:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/107106\/"},"modified":"2025-10-07T18:14:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T18:14:08","slug":"what-fianna-fail-tds-are-saying-about-jim-gavin-and-micheal-martin-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/107106\/","title":{"rendered":"What Fianna F\u00e1il TDs are saying about Jim Gavin and Miche\u00e1l Martin \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><b>Fianna F\u00e1il Cork East TD James O\u2019Connor <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\">Fianna F\u00e1il<\/a> backbencher James O\u2019Connor has said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\">Jim Gavin<\/a> \u201cshould never have found himself on the ballot paper\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In a lengthy statement on Tuesday, the Cork East TD said Mr Gavin was there due to \u201cextensive pressure\u201d put on Fianna F\u00e1il TDs and Senators by party leader Miche\u00e1l Martin and deputy leader Jack Chambers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cThey repeatedly phoned each member of the parliamentary party in the days before the selection convention on September 9th,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cI regret the treatment bestowed on Mr Gavin and his family in the past two days. Elevating him one day and then throwing him under a bus the next has to be the most unceremonious dumping on a party candidate in modern Irish political history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><b>Former Fianna F\u00e1il minister and deputy leader \u00c9amon \u00d3 Cu\u00edv<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eamon-o-cuiv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eamon-o-cuiv\/\">\u00c9amon \u00d3 Cu\u00edv<\/a> said it was \u201chighly unlikely\u201d that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\">Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> will lead the party into the next general election. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast, Mr \u00d3 Cu\u00edv said the Taoiseach had gone past the \u201cnatural sell-by date\u201d of Fianna F\u00e1il party leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cJust on a statistical basis, except for the founding leader of Fianna F\u00e1il, no Fianna F\u00e1il leader has lasted as long as Miche\u00e1l Martin,\u201d he said. \u201cThere seems to be a natural sell-by date for leaders of Fianna F\u00e1il.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In relation to Jim Gavin\u2019s abandoned candidacy, Mr \u00d3 Cu\u00edv said the debacle had \u201csignificantly damaged\u201d the party. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/06\/jim-gavin-withdraws-presidential-election-latest-live-updates\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Gavin was asked \u2018repeatedly\u2019 by Fianna F\u00e1il if he had ever had issues with tenants, says Miche\u00e1l MartinOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s more about the process than the actuality of what happened,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think it was foreseeable that this issue would have arisen, but long before that I think it\u2019s fair to say that Jim Gavin\u2019s candidacy wasn\u2019t going well. It goes back to a fatal flaw; this thing was rushed in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><b>Fianna F\u00e1il MEP Barry Cowen <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Barry Cowen has called for a \u201cfull and frank review\u201d of the process through which the party decided on a candidate for the presidential election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Cowen told RT\u00c9 radio\u2019s Morning Ireland that he had not been satisfied with the lack of transparency and structure in the process in the months leading up to the decision. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">\u201cThere was little transparency or structure,\u201d he said. \u201cThe leadership seemed to believe from the outset that no current or former Fianna F\u00e1il TD or Minister, for example, could come forward and could win, so they looked outside.
