{"id":107283,"date":"2025-10-07T21:18:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T21:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/107283\/"},"modified":"2025-10-07T21:18:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T21:18:07","slug":"maria-steen-calls-for-presidential-election-to-be-cancelled-over-jim-gavins-departure-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/107283\/","title":{"rendered":"Maria Steen calls for presidential election to be cancelled over Jim Gavin\u2019s departure \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/maria-steen\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/maria-steen\/\">Maria Steen<\/a> has called for the 2025 Irish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/05\/a-beginners-guide-to-the-irish-presidential-election\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/05\/a-beginners-guide-to-the-irish-presidential-election\/\">presidential election<\/a> to be cancelled and run again, claiming its political legitimacy has been \u201cfurther undermined\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\">Fianna F\u00e1il<\/a> candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\">Jim Gavin<\/a> ending his campaign. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Steen, a conservative campaigner who had tried to run as an independent candidate, missed out on a place on the ballot paper after securing 18 of the required 20 signatures from TDs and senators before the deadline for nominations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some of her supporters, who include social conservatives and other right-wing voters, have threatened to spoil their ballots on October 24th in protest at what they see as a lack of choice. Ms Steen\u2019s failure to get enough support to run as a candidate also prompted criticism and online abuse of Independent TDs and Senators who declined to back her. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ms Steen says the dramatic exit of Mr Gavin from the race has \u201cfurther undermined\u201d the upcoming poll. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDemocracy is supposed to mean that the people get to decide. The political legitimacy of the presidential election was already in doubt due to the closing of ranks by the major parties, which prevented any independent candidate from making it as far as the ballot,\u201d Ms Steen said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt has now been further undermined by the dramatic implosion of the Fianna F\u00e1il-backed candidacy of Jim Gavin. As a result, the public is left with very little choice, and a large constituency feels totally unrepresented.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cGiven all that has happened, the better course at this stage would be to cancel the election and call a new one, if for no other reason than to secure public acceptance of the legitimacy of whoever is ultimately elected to serve as our next president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ms Steen said that if the presidential election was run again, it is \u201clikely\u201d that she would try to run again. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/06\/a-timeline-of-jim-gavins-short-lived-push-for-the-presidency\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A timeline of Jim Gavin\u2019s short-lived push for the presidencyOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">This month\u2019s poll will now be the first presidential election in more than 50 years to only have two candidates actively contesting, though Mr Gavin will remain on the ballot paper.
