{"id":108997,"date":"2025-10-08T14:49:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T14:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/108997\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T14:49:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T14:49:12","slug":"ct-hospital-names-new-ceo-amid-ambitious-320m-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/108997\/","title":{"rendered":"CT hospital names new CEO amid ambitious, $320M expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former top administrator at a Rhode Island hospital has been named president and chief executive officer at coHartford-based<a href=\"https:\/\/www.connecticutchildrens.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Connecticut Children\u2019s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shannon Sullivan, who most recently held the post of president and chief operating officer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenandinfants.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Women &amp; Infants Hospital<\/a> in Providence, RI, will assume her new position Jan. 12. Sullivan will succeed James Shmerling, who is retiring at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan\u2019s appointment, announced Tuesday, comes as Connecticut Children\u2019s near the opening of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courant.com\/2023\/04\/28\/ct-childrens-280-million-hartford-expansion-poised-to-place-hospital-among-six-fetal-care-centers-in-tcountry\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its new, $320 million clinical tower <\/a>\u00a0at its flagship campus in Hartford, which is expected in three months. The expansion is seen as increasing the breadth of care, integrating advanced technologies and strengthening the health care system\u2019s stature, both regionally and nationally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a transformational moment for Connecticut Children\u2019s,\u201d Jon Rubin, chair of the corporate board of directors, said. \u201cShannon\u2019s experience, vision and values align with our mission, and her leadership will propel us forward as we continue to care for children and families in Connecticut and the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Shannon Sullivan has been named the new president and chief executive officer of Connecticut Children's. (Handout)<\/p>\n<p>Connecticut Children\u2019s now has 35 locations in Connecticut, New York and western Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement, Sullivan has two decades of leadership experience. She has been recognized for innovation and a patient-centered approach to health care, including overseeing the construction of a field hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Women &amp; Infants Hospital is the major teaching affiliate of <a href=\"https:\/\/medical.brown.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University<\/a>, according to its web site. The hospital also noted it the 9th largest stand-alone obstetrical service in the country about 8,500 deliveries per year.<\/p>\n<p>The 195,000-square-foot expansion will double the size of Connecticut Children\u2019s campus in Hartford and allow it to push into fetal care from its traditional pediatric care roots.<\/p>\n<p>The eight-story expansion will have two floors with 50 private, neonatal intensive care rooms, giving parents privacy and a place to sleep and shower with their newborns nearby.<\/p>\n<p>The new tower also will house\u00a0a fetal care center\u00a0\u2014 already launched by the hospital \u2014 that will provide care to expectant mothers whose babies may need surgery before they are born.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an honor to join Connecticut Children\u2019s at such an extraordinary time in its history,\u201d Sullivan said, in a statement. \u201cI am inspired by the organization\u2019s commitment to children and families, and I look forward to working alongside the exceptional team here to advance, care, research, innovation and community impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tina Brown-Stevenson, chair of the hospital\u2019s executive search committee, praised the work of Shmerling that has guided the hospital\u2019s evolution, including planning for the new tower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of Jim\u2019s dedication and vision, Shannon is now well positioned to continue the growth that Jim started and deliver innovative care that will ensure Connecticut Children\u2019s remains a trusted leader in pediatric healthcare for generations to come,\u201d Brown said, in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth R.
