According to a new report,\u00a0Dwayne Johnson<\/strong>\u00a0was upset about The Smashing Machine<\/strong>\u2018s box office numbers. The sports drama opened to just $6 million on its opening weekend despite having a budget of $50 million. The film originally premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2025. At the festival, writer-director Benny Safdie received the Silver Lion award for his work on the movie. Johnson underwent a considerable physical transformation for his role as Mark Kerr in the film.<\/p>\n

A new report suggests that Dwayne Johnson is \u201cheartbroken\u201d over The Smashing Machine\u2019s box office numbers.<\/p>\n

This report comes from insider Rob Shuter. On #ShuterScoop<\/a>, Shuter said a source told him the wrestler-actor \u201cpoured his soul\u201d into the film. \u201cHe thought this was going to be his\u00a0Gladiator\u00a0moment \u2014 the film that finally got him an Oscar nod,\u201d the source added. \u201cThe numbers devastated him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another source shared that the film was \u201cpersonal\u201d for the Red One star as \u201che wanted to prove he\u2019s more than just muscle.\u201d \u201cThis wasn\u2019t about money,\u201d the source further stated. \u201cIt was about legacy. And right now, he\u2019s wondering if Hollywood will ever see the artist behind The Rock.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shuter\u2019s report comes after Johnson shared his thoughts on the film\u2019s box office performance. In a recent Instagram post, the 53-year-old thanked fans for seeing the film. The actor didn\u2019t seem fazed by the film\u2019s low box office opening. He acknowledged that box office results couldn\u2019t be controlled but that an actor\u2019s performance could, saying he would \u201calways run to that opportunity.\u201d Further, he thanked Safdie for believing in him and admitted that the film changed his life.<\/p>\n

The Smashing Machine is currently playing in theaters. As of writing, the film has a 72% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>\u2018 Tomatometer and 76% on the Popcornmeter.<\/p>\n

The film revolves around Mark Kerr, an up-and-coming MMA fighter who dreams of becoming the world\u2019s greatest fighter. However, his opioid addiction and complex relationship with girlfriend Dawn Staples complicate his journey.<\/p>\n

The film also stars Emily Blunt, Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten, Lyndsey Gavin, Zoe Kosovic, Oleksandr Usyk, Satoshi Ishii, and James Moontasri.<\/p>\n
