{"id":109694,"date":"2025-10-08T21:34:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T21:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/109694\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T21:34:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T21:34:10","slug":"spiritans-to-sell-tipperary-farm-to-fund-compensation-for-abuse-survivors-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/109694\/","title":{"rendered":"Spiritans to sell Tipperary farm to fund compensation for abuse survivors \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Spiritan order is to sell one of the biggest farms in Co Tipperary as part of its pledge to compensate victims of abuse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The 765-acre Rockwell Farm will be sold on the open market and is likely to fetch at least \u20ac20 million, according to industry sources.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The land was used for an agricultural college until the 1980s and is now a dairy farm with up to 650 cows. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">By November of last year, 359 survivors of abuse at Spiritan schools had come forward, including 347 disclosed in the scoping inquiry report on abuse at private fee-paying schools published in September 2024<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The schools involved were Blackrock College, its feeder junior school Willow Park, Rockwell College, St Mary\u2019s College, St Michael\u2019s College and Templeogue College. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In a statement, Spiritans Provincial Fr Brendan Carr said the order had been upfront about not having the cash to compensate victims and would instead need to sell assets. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said the order had been \u201cfully transparent about their financial position\u201d from the beginning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cProgress is being made and Rockwell Farm will be the first of these properties to be sold, but this involves multiple legal, valuation and regulatory steps that simply take time to complete.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">He added that as a registered charitable organisation, the Spiritans are subject to the oversight of the Charities Regulator and subject to audit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The order also felt a need \u201cto respond clearly to the suggestion that the Spiritans are deliberately delaying or obstructing progress\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Last Friday, the order was accused of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/10\/03\/spiritans-adding-to-suffering-of-survivors-of-sex-abuse-in-their-schools-says-advocacy-group\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2025\/10\/03\/spiritans-adding-to-suffering-of-survivors-of-sex-abuse-in-their-schools-says-advocacy-group\/\">adding to the suffering of the survivors<\/a> by missing the deadline given last June in announcing a redress scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The Spiritans had not provided any such update at the end of summer, the Restore Together group said, and had been seeking a meeting with the order ever since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Responding on Wednesday, Fr Carr said  \u201ca commitment was made\u201d but \u201cprogress has not been as fast as anyone would wish\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/social-affairs\/2025\/06\/16\/spiritans-commit-to-redress-scheme-for-school-abuse-survivors-in-attempt-to-offer-atonement\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spiritans commit to redress scheme for school abuse survivors in attempt to \u2018offer atonement\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fr Carr acknowledged \u201cthe immense urgency that victims and survivors feel. We feel it too\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">He added: \u201cWe continue to meet regularly with survivors and to provide ongoing counselling and restorative meetings facilitated by the independent Restorative Justice Team. These encounters are deeply important to us and they continue to shape how we respond and plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He appealed \u201cfor understanding as we continue to navigate these complex financial and legal steps\u201d.
