{"id":114649,"date":"2025-10-11T02:17:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-11T02:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/114649\/"},"modified":"2025-10-11T02:17:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T02:17:12","slug":"tributes-to-leading-astronomer-and-visionary-leader-who-shaped-international-reputation-of-armagh-observatory-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/114649\/","title":{"rendered":"Tributes to leading astronomer and \u2018visionary leader\u2019 who shaped international reputation of Armagh Observatory \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A former director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/armagh-obervatory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/armagh-obervatory\/\">Armagh Observatory and Planetarium<\/a> will be remembered for shaping \u201cnew generations of astronomers\u201d following his death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Dr Mart de Groot headed Ireland\u2019s leading astronomical research centre for almost two decades, and has been described as a \u201cvisionary leader\u201d in tributes following his death on Thursday at his home in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/richhill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/richhill\/\">Richhill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Dutch astronomer, who was born in Leiden in 1938, took on the role of Armagh Observatory director in 1976, and remained in the post until 1994.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/netherlands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/netherlands\/\">Netherlands<\/a>, he completed a PhD at the University of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/utrecht\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/utrecht\/\">Utrecht<\/a>, with a thesis on the star P Cygni. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/sale-agreed-for-disused-psni-barracks-in-co-tyrone-KW6O7EWMT5EUBPMUC7NNOZVOXU\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Sale agreed for disused PSNI barracks in Co Tyrone\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/JP6P5NOW4JHQNKQDJK7EUEIXLA.png\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/kingsbridge-medic-brian-og-mcalary-on-why-coaching-his-daughters-has-renewed-his-buzz-for-gaelic-games-7WENK3LNYFG45KT55VCB7KFODA\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Kingsbridge medic Brian &#xD3;g McAlary on why coaching his daughters has renewed his &#x2018;buzz&#x2019; for gaelic games\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DFVL6ZUPEFDVVKQAKGBMMHKK4Y.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His research, which later included authoring of a book on the subject, helped form the current scientific understanding of the star and wider stellar evolution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In the early 1970s, before his move to Ireland, he was a resident astronomer at the European Southern Observatory in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/munich\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/munich\/\">Munich<\/a>, Germany<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He has been praised for his \u201clasting impact on the development and international reputation\u201d of the Armagh Observatory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A spokesperson said the PhD Programme he launched there in in 1985, \u201ccontinues to nurture new generations of astronomers to this day\u201d, while he also led \u201csignificant refurbishment and modernisation\u201d of the historic Observatory, which originally opened in 1790.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Following his tenure, he continued his research, with a focus on cosmology and a wider understanding of the universe and its origin.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Dr Mart de Groot with wife Willemien\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/VZ6ABGDYTZCTJMAD3SS3MR6DBY.JPG\"  width=\"800\" height=\"532\"\/>Dr Mart de Groot with wife Willemien <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Current Armagh Observatory director, Professor Michael Burton, said: \u201cMart de Groot was a visionary leader who combined a passion for science with a deep respect for the legacy of Armagh Observatory. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHis commitment to innovative research and education has shaped the institution we know today. The Observatory\u2019s thriving postgraduate programme and its international standing are a testament to his enduring influence. We are proud to continue the work he so passionately advanced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He added: \u201cDr de Groot\u2019s contributions to astronomy and to Armagh\u2019s scientific community will be remembered with great admiration and gratitude.
