That pessimism was seen across demographic groups and political affiliations. Overall, sentiment dropped 5% month over month, the survey showed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">On an annual basis, inflation has held <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/charts\/consumer-price-index\/consumer-price-index-by-category-line-chart.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:at 3% or lower so far this year;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">at 3% or lower so far this year<\/a>, though core inflation stripping out more volatile food and energy prices<a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/cpi-report-core-inflation-rises-by-most-in-six-months-stoking-tariff-driven-price-concerns-153654897.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:rose 0.3% between June and July;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> rose 0.3% between June and July<\/a>, the largest gain in six months. (High country-specific tariffs took effect last week.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Consumers in the survey also expect the job market to weaken, following what is now a three-month streak of disappointing jobs numbers. Though the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/charts\/employment-situation\/civilian-unemployment-rate.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:unemployment rate;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">unemployment rate<\/a> has been hovering between 4% and 4.2% since May 2024, the US economy added 73,000 nonfarm payrolls in July, less than the 104,000 expected by economists.
