{"id":115069,"date":"2025-10-11T07:44:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-11T07:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/115069\/"},"modified":"2025-10-11T07:44:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T07:44:07","slug":"micheal-martin-will-vote-for-heather-humphreys-will-not-tell-party-to-back-fg-contender-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/115069\/","title":{"rendered":"Miche\u00e1l Martin will vote for Heather Humphreys, will not tell party to back FG contender \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Taoiseach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\">Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> will vote for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\">Fine Gael<\/a> candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/heather-humphreys\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/heather-humphreys\/\">Heather Humphreys<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\">presidential election<\/a> but his own party will not offer any direction to its supporters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Martin said on Friday that his personal position is that he would vote for Ms Humphreys but he would not be telling anyone else how to vote \u201cin any shape or form\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Senior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fianna-fail\/\">Fianna F\u00e1il<\/a> sources confirmed there would be no attempt to swing the party behind Ms Humphreys. This stance is strongly advocated for by many TDs, though a number of senior figures have said they will support Ms Humphreys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Martin\u2019s preference follows a torrid week for his party after it was thrown into turmoil by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-gavin\/\">Jim Gavin<\/a>\u2019s shock decision to end his presidential campaign on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">It was confirmed on Friday night that Mr Gavin has repaid \u20ac3,300, owed for the last 16 years, to his former tenant Niall Donald. It was the revelation of the outstanding debt, after Mr Gavin had denied it, that led to his withdrawal from the campaign last weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, it has emerged that senior Fianna F\u00e1il figures had concluded in consultation with their candidate by last Saturday evening \u2013 24 hours before he announced his withdrawal \u2013 that Mr Gavin\u2019s campaign was finished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They believed that Mr Gavin\u2019s position became untenable after Mr Donald contacted Fianna F\u00e1il on Saturday to contradict Mr Gavin\u2019s denials, offering to share corroborating documents and further detail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe knew at that stage that the game was up. We were all sick in our stomachs,\u201d a senior party source told The Irish Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Gavin wanted to continue with an RT\u00c9 debate on Sunday and needed time to discuss the matter with his family, it is understood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Elsewhere on Friday, Ms Humphreys strongly rejected accusations of a \u201csmear campaign\u201d against her presidential rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\">Catherine Connolly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ms Humphreys insisted the presidential election is \u201ca fair campaign between myself and Catherine Connolly and ultimately people will have to make up their own minds as to which of us will be the best 10th president of Ireland\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Citing comments by the former Fine Gael minister and commentator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ivan-yates\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ivan-yates\/\">Ivan Yates<\/a>, in which he said Fine Gael should attack her, Ms Connolly said Mr Yates had \u201cexposed without hesitation what Fine Gael are up to\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said her campaign was for \u201ca different type of Ireland that will not tolerate that type of language from an ex-minister or indeed from the Fine Gael party\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Presidential candidate Catherine Connolly canvassing in Rathfarnham, Dublin, on Thursday.
