{"id":115215,"date":"2025-10-11T09:29:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-11T09:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/115215\/"},"modified":"2025-10-11T09:29:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T09:29:10","slug":"kildare-residents-urged-to-learn-about-risks-associated-with-serious-condition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/115215\/","title":{"rendered":"Kildare residents urged to learn about risks associated with serious condition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Epilepsy Ireland has urged residents throughout County <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leinsterleader.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Kildare<\/a> to understand the risks associated with one serious condition.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the organisation has appealed to people living with epilepsy and their families in Kildare to learn more about the &#8220;devastating aspect&#8221; of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy in Ireland (SUDEP).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The organisation&#8217;s call comes ahead of SUDEP Action Day 2025, which will take place this coming October 15.<\/p>\n<p>According to Epilepsy Ireland, SUDEP is confirmed when someone with epilepsy dies and no other cause of death\u00a0can be found during the post-mortem. Many of those who die are often young and otherwise healthy.<\/p>\n<p>While the exact cause behind SUDEP is unknown, there are known factors that can increase a person\u2019s risk of SUDEP. This can include having frequent seizures, not taking medication as prescribed, and alcohol or substance abuse.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leinsterleader.ie\/news\/local-news\/1912053\/eight-tonnes-of-waste-gathered-in-recycling-event-in-one-town.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">READ NEXT:\u00a0Eight tonnes of waste gathered in recycling event in one town<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the importance of knowing about SUDEP, Epilepsy Ireland&#8217;s advocacy and communications manager, Paddy McGeoghegan, said: &#8220;Knowledge is power and unfortunately, SUDEP is something that many people with epilepsy and their families\u00a0\u2014 and even healthcare professionals\u00a0\u2014 do not know enough about.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, in speaking with bereaved families, we often hear the devastating story that the first time they heard about SUDEP is when it is listed in their loved one\u2019s death certificate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This must change; we owe it to the families who\u2019ve lost loved ones and those who\u2019ve been lost to ensure that SUDEP is no longer a hidden tragedy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Awareness of the risk factors can save lives,\u00a0as many of them are modifiable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He also said that throughout this month, Epilepsy Ireland will be sharing &#8220;educational resources, personal testimonies, and expert insights&#8221; in an attempt to help both the public and healthcare professionals better understand SUDEP and how to reduce risk.<\/p>\n<p>Mr McGeoghegan added: &#8220;I would particularly appeal to the estimated 1,951 people with epilepsy in Kildare and their family members to learn more by visiting our website,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epilepsy.ie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">www.epilepsy.ie<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leinsterleader.ie\/news\/local-news\/1912358\/alert-path-kerb-works-to-taking-place-on-kildare-border.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">READ NEXT:\u00a0ALERT: Path \/ kerb works to taking place on Kildare border<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition, the organisation has also reiterated their calls for the government to develop a National Strategy to reduce SUDEP and epilepsy-related deaths in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Epilepsy Ireland explained that last year,\u00a0research, which was supported by Epilepsy Ireland, confirmed\u00a0the incidence of SUDEP in Ireland for the first\u00a0time\u00a0ever; an incidence of 1:1,400.<\/p>\n<p>This equates to the loss of 33 people per year.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about\u00a0the organisation\u2019s\u00a0calls for a national strategy, Mr McGeoghegan said: &#8220;Until now, most of the initiatives taken around SUDEP have been led by Epilepsy Ireland, often supported by the fundraising efforts of bereaved families.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We cannot continue to work in isolation on this issue and depend solely on the fundraising efforts of bereaved families to drive action on reducing SUDEP and epilepsy-related deaths in Ireland.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He continued: &#8220;We now have the data, we know the scale of the issue; what we need is action.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re asking for leadership and a coordinated response involving the various arms of the state to prevent future deaths.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We invite anyone affected by SUDEP or any epilepsy-related\u00a0death\u00a0to share their experience and help us drive this change and\u00a0we\u00a0would\u00a0also\u00a0make a direct appeal to local Oireachtas members to help us make this a reality,&#8221; he concluded.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leinsterleader.ie\/news\/local-news\/1912040\/22-people-on-trolleys-at-kildare-s-main-hospital.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">READ NEXT:\u00a022 people on trolleys at Kildare&#8217;s main hospital<\/a><\/p>\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT &#8211; CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT &#8211; CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT &#8211; CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT &#8211; CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT &#8211; CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT &#8211; CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT &#8211; CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT &#8211; CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT &#8211; CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Epilepsy Ireland has urged residents throughout County Kildare to understand the risks associated with one serious condition.
