{"id":115566,"date":"2025-10-11T13:29:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-11T13:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/115566\/"},"modified":"2025-10-11T13:29:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T13:29:07","slug":"tributes-paid-after-death-of-former-irish-examiner-photographer-kieran-clancy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/115566\/","title":{"rendered":"Tributes paid after death of former Irish Examiner photographer Kieran Clancy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tributes have been paid to award-winning Irish press photographer, Kieran Clancy, who sadly passed away following an illness on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from Mayorstone, on the outskirts of the Treaty City, Clancy worked for numerous news and public relations agencies and was regarded by many as one of Ireland\u2019s leading press and commercial photographers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He had battled with Parkinson\u2019s disease for a number of years and passed away surrounded by family at a nursing home in Co Clare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr Clancy enjoyed a distinguished career as a freelance photojournalist after spending 20 years as a staff photographer with the  Cork Examiner, later the  Irish Examiner, based in Limerick and covering news, sport, and entertainment across the midwest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He was a former President of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland (PPAI) and, in 2021, was awarded Honorary Membership of the association in recognition of his \u201coutstanding contribution\u201d to press photography in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHe had a great eye for a photograph and the story being told in the image,\u201d said Mr Clancy\u2019s former colleague and friend, Noel Gavin, formerly  Irish Daily Star, and the  Press 22 photographic agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHe was very competitive \u2014 we all were \u2014 but Kieran was stealthy, he would always get the best photo, the best angle, and he did it quietly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHe was a great credit to his Dad, Se\u00e1n, who was so long in the photograph business before him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/4817124_4_articleinline_300575.jpg\" alt=\"Irish Examiner photographer Kieran Clancy shows Nikolai Kutayev aged 6 from Belarus the pictures he has taken on his digital camera at Shannon Airport after Nikolai arrived with the Chernobyl Childrens Project. Picture James Horan\/Press 22<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Legendary Limerick photographer Owen \u201cSouthie\u201d South also paid tribute: \u201cKieran was a lovely man. He was a great photographer with the Examiner working in Limerick. His death is very sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHe was a great colleague, a great guy, and he was meticulous with every job that he did \u2014 he always did it right.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Liam Burke, who worked alongside Mr Clancy for decades in Limerick, said: \u201cKieran was a wonderful, award-winning photographer. He was a pure gentleman, he had a great eye and he was so enthusiastic about the job \u2014 it\u2019s very sad,\u201d said freelance photographer Brendan Gleeson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Over his stellar career, Kieran Clancy photographed presidents to paupers and everyone in between. After retiring from the press corps in 2016, he continued working in wedding and commercial photography.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Recalling one of many fond memories of working alongside him, Noel Gavin said: \u201cI remember a really funny incident involving Kieran during an occasion when the former US President Gerald Ford stopped over at Shannon airport at some unearthly hour, and we were there taking photographs in the airport\u2019s VIP room where they used to bring dignitaries.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/4817130_4_articleinline_40518_-1347190779.jpg\" alt=\"Kieran Clancy with former Irish Examiner picture editor Norma Cuddihy and former staff photographer Denis Minihane.
