For Hyung-ju (Jung Da-min), numbers don’t lie, unlike the unpredictable nature of human emotions. His life, however, is thrown into disarray by a problem of probability he can’t control. According to an Yonhap report, he faces a 50% chance of inheriting the genetic kidney disease that took his mother’s life. When a paternity test reveals a less than 0.1% chance that the man who raised him is his biological father, his world is mathematically overturned.

A Quest for Survival

Directed by Choi Chang-hwan, his eighth feature film, the story follows Hyung-ju’s journey to find his biological father. Using clues from his late mother’s diary and information gathered by a hacker friend, he identifies three potential candidates. Hyung-ju’s motivation is not a sentimental search for his roots or paternal love. Instead, it is a pragmatic mission driven by necessity: he needs to secure a promise for a kidney donation to increase his own probability of survival. This stark condition is something his loving adoptive father, Min-gyu (Kwak Min-gyu), cannot resolve with affection alone.

An Unconditional Bond

Despite the painful circumstances, Min-gyu’s pure paternal love shines as he chooses to help his son achieve his goal rather than succumbing to helplessness. The dynamic between Hyung-ju, who is clumsy in all aspects of life except math, and Min-gyu, a former fighter who has learned life’s wisdom through experience, is deeply harmonious despite their lack of resemblance.

A Fresh Take on a Classic Trope

While the premise of a teenager seeking a biological parent is not new, the film offers a fresh perspective through the unique and endearing personalities of the three father candidates. Each man, once considered by Hyung-ju’s mother, warmly accepts the boy who suddenly appears asking for a DNA sample. Their interactions provide unexpected comfort, adding a layer of warmth to Hyung-ju’s calculated quest. The film is set to release on October 15th.

Poster and scene from film ‘Journeys in Math and Genetics’ The new film ‘Journeys in Math and Genetics’…

[272
18,458,71201,19,17,1698,71200,71203,133,71202
0":"post-115660","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-genetics","8":"tag-eire","9":"tag-genetics","10":"tag-genetics-film","11":"tag-ie","12":"tag-ireland","13":"tag-kidney-disease","14":"tag-math-prodigy","15":"tag-paternity-test","16":"tag-science","17":"tag-teenager-seeking-biological-parent
["GET
