{"id":115704,"date":"2025-10-11T15:06:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-11T15:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/115704\/"},"modified":"2025-10-11T15:06:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T15:06:08","slug":"aid-groups-to-scale-up-efforts-as-palestinians-homes-reduced-to-dust-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/115704\/","title":{"rendered":"Aid groups to scale up efforts as Palestinians\u2019 homes \u2018reduced to dust\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Aid groups are preparing to scale up relief work in the Gaza Strip as a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas entered its second day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Unicef and its partners are urging Israel to reopen more crossings and allow aid to flow into Gaza more freely. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tens of thousands of Palestinians headed back to the heavily destroyed northern Gaza Strip on Saturday, after a US-brokered ceasefire came into effect in a deal that raised hopes for ending the Israel-Hamas war. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhen people get there, they\u2019re going to find rubble. They\u2019ll find that their homes and their neighbourhoods have been reduced to dust,\u201d Unicef spokeswoman Tess Ingram told AP on Friday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking from central Gaza, Ms Ingram said: A ceasefire alone is not enough. &#8230; it also needs to ensure a surge of humanitarian aid that begins to address the tremendous damage that has been done over the past two years.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> has said \u201cfor the most part, there is consensus\u201d on how the next stages of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-hamas-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-hamas-conflict\/\">Gaza ceasefire plan<\/a> will work, but admitted that \u201csome of the details &#8230; will be worked out\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In comments made on Friday, Mr Trump spoke about the remaining hostages in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaza-strip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaza-strip\/\">Gaza<\/a>, adding that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hamas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/hamas\">Hamas<\/a> were gathering them \u201cnow\u201d, adding: \u201cthey\u2019re in some pretty rough places\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The remaining 48 hostages, about 20 of them believed to be alive, are to be released by Monday. Questions remain over who will govern Gaza as Israeli troops gradually pull back and whether Hamas will disarm, as called for in Mr Trump\u2019s ceasefire plan. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US president, who has been praised by Hamas and many in Israel for his role in securing a ceasefire deal, said he believes the agreement will \u201chold\u201d because \u201cthey\u2019re [Hamas and Israel] all tired of the fighting\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">US troops have started arriving in Israel to set up a co-ordination centre that will oversee the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, it has been reported. The troops are not expected to enter the Gaza Strip, ABC News reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Israeli military confirmed the start of the Gaza ceasefire on Friday, and Palestinians said heavy shelling in parts of Gaza earlier that day had mostly stopped after the military\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu said in a televised statement the next stages would see Hamas disarm and Gaza demilitarised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Netanyahu said: If this is achieved the easy way \u2013 so be it. If not \u2013 it will be achieved the hard way. The Israeli military has said it will continue to operate defensively from the roughly 50 per cent of Gaza it still controls after pulling back to agreed-upon lines. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/2025\/10\/09\/qa-what-do-we-know-about-trumps-gaza-deal\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What do we know about Trump\u2019s Gaza deal?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Israel has shared a list of the Palestinian detainees that it plans to release as part of the ceasefire agreement made with Hamas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Of the 250 Palestinian prisoners, 15 will be released in East Jerusalem, 100 to the West Bank, and 135 will be deported. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Israel is expected to release about 2,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the remaining hostages in Gaza. A list Israel published on Friday did not include high-profile prisoner Marwan Barghouti, the most popular Palestinian leader and a potentially unifying figure, reports the Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The United Nations was given the green light by Israel to begin delivering scaled-up aid into Gaza starting on Sunday, a UN official said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The aid will include 170,000 metric tons that have already been positioned in neighbouring countries such as Jordan and Egypt as humanitarian officials awaited permission from Israeli forces to restart their work. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Palestinians make their way to Gaza City from Nuseirat in the central Gaza Strip on October 11th, 2025. Photograph: EYAD BABA\/AFP via Getty Images <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A UN spokesperson told reporters on Friday that fuel, medical supplies and other critical materials have started flowing through the Kerem Shalom crossing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Trump plan calls for Israel to maintain an open-ended military presence inside Gaza, along its border with Israel. An international force, comprised largely of troops from Arab and Muslim countries, would be responsible for security inside Gaza. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US would lead a large internationally funded reconstruction effort, reports AP. The plan envisions an eventual role for the Palestinian Authority \u2013 something Mr Netanyahu has long opposed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But it requires the authority, which administers parts of the West Bank, to undergo a sweeping reform programme that could take years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to the AP, the Trump plan is even more vague about a future Palestinian state, which Mr Netanyahu firmly rejects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, Mr Trump plans to convene world leaders for a summit on Gaza during his visit to Egypt next week, Axios reported. Among those expected to participate are representatives from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Indonesia. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to a US official, Mr Netanyahu will not be present. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump confirmed that he would meet a \u201clot of leaders\u201d in Cairo on Monday to discuss the future of Gaza and it has been reported that he will also travel to Israel, where he will address the Knesset. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Elsewhere, Lebanese president Joseph Aoun condemned Israel on Saturday for carrying out overnight strikes on civilian facilities that the health ministry said killed at least one person. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOnce again, southern Lebanon has been the target of a heinous Israeli aggression against civilian installations \u2013 without justification or pretext,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Israeli army confirmed it conducted strikes in Lebanon.
