The rapper has met the challenges of her turbulent career with many advocacy efforts, including 2022\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/badbitcheshavebaddaystoo.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BadBitchesHaveBadDaysToo.com<\/a>, an online wellness hub with resources \u2013\u00a0 including The Trevor Project \u2013 and therapy directories, crisis hotlines, and other mental health organizations. Megan\u2019s Mental Health Champion of the Year Award announcement coincides with World Mental Health Day. Established by the nearly thirty-year old organization in 2021, the award has previously been given to Dua Lipa, Dylan Mulvaney, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/janelle-monae-the-age-of-pleasure-album-interview-1234736254\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Janelle Mon\u00e1e<\/a>, and Lil Nas X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m honored to receive this year\u2019s Mental Health Champion award from The Trevor Project,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/megan-thee-stallion\/\" id=\"auto-tag_megan-thee-stallion\" data-tag=\"megan-thee-stallion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Megan Thee Stallion<\/a> said in a statement in The Trevor Project\u2019s press release. \u201cMy goal has always been to use my platform to help break stigmas around mental health and provide resources for those seeking safe spaces to have honest and heartfelt conversations. Mental health impacts all of us, so it\u2019s important to lead with love and empathy. I\u2019m grateful for organizations like The Trevor Project that are committed to spreading awareness and supporting our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/lgbtq-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lgbtq-2\" data-tag=\"lgbtq-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LGBTQ+<\/a> youth in powerful ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAfter being shot by Tory Lanez as her star rose in 2020, Megan grew forthright about the psychological torment she endured following the incident and its fallout, including years long legal proceedings that culminated in Lanez\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/tory-lanez-trial-verdict-megan-thee-stallion-shooting-1234652388\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conviction<\/a> in 2022. In 2023, she joined the Ad Council\u2019s \u201cSeize the Awkward\u201d campaign designed to break down mental health stigma among youth. In the PSA, she shared: \u201cI\u2019ve always been told I gotta be strong. Thick-skinned. Stiff upper lip. Tough as nails. But to be everything for everybody \u2013 it wears on you. Black don\u2019t crack, they say. But it can. I can. We all can. Y\u2019all, it\u2019s okay to not be okay. Reach out to a friend if you see them going through it. No matter who you are, being vulnerable is what makes us whole.\u201d In 2024, the same year she released \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/megan-thee-stallion-cobra-music-video-1234868931\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cobra<\/a>,\u201d a striking admission of her battles with depression and suicidal ideation, she also highlighted her mental heath journey in the California Department of Public Health\u2019s \u201cNever A Bother\u201d youth suicide prevention campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAccording to reports from The Trevor Project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/survey-2024\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">39 percent<\/a> of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, while 46 percent of transgender and nonbinary youth in particular did. LGBTQ+ youth of color in reported higher rates than white peers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/research-briefs\/discrimination-among-black-lgbtq-young-people-and-suicide-risk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">21 percent<\/a> of Black transgender and nonbinary young people reported a suicide attempt in the past year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cMegan Thee Stallion is a mental health champion in every sense of the word,\u201d said Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project. \u201cHer raw honesty, bold advocacy, and deep love for her community make her an extraordinary role model \u2013 particularly for Black LGBTQ+ youth, who face some of the highest rates of discrimination, mental health challenges, and suicide risk. Megan\u2019s activism doesn\u2019t just stop at words; she builds real, tangible resources for vulnerable communities that are too often overlooked or left behind. As a queer Black person, I wish I had someone like Megan to look up to when I was growing up. Her courage, her authenticity, and her unwavering commitment to mental health advocacy will echo for generations. The Trevor Project is proud to honor her incredible impact, especially at a time when LGBTQ+ young people are being stripped of life-saving resources. It\u2019s essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOver the course of her career, Megan has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/mariah-carey-megan-thee-stallion-headline-la-pride-2023-1234704541\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">embraced<\/a> LGBTQ+ communities and been open about her own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/megan-thee-stallion-megan-five-takeaways-1235049763\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">queerness<\/a> as well, like on \u201cBroke His Heart\u201d from her third studio album Megan, where she raps plainly, \u201cI like girls and I like niggas, both of \u2019em gettin\u2019 ate.\u201d Megan and her management company Roc Nation have also faced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/megan-thee-stallion-lawsuit-rapper-dismiss-cameraman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> from a former cameraman alleging he endured elements of a hostile work environment under her in part because he is gay. In July, Megan and Roc Nation unsuccessfully moved to have the case dismissed.
