{"id":117778,"date":"2025-10-12T17:50:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-12T17:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/117778\/"},"modified":"2025-10-12T17:50:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-12T17:50:10","slug":"catherine-connolly-accuses-fg-of-politics-of-fear-and-smear-in-latest-debate-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/117778\/","title":{"rendered":"Catherine Connolly accuses FG of politics of \u2018fear\u2019 and \u2018smear\u2019 in latest debate \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/catherine-connolly\/\">Catherine Connolly<\/a> has accused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/fine-gael\/\">Fine Gael<\/a> of \u201cthe politics of fear &#8230; the politics of smear\u201d as she and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/heather-humphreys\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/heather-humphreys\/\">Heather Humphreys<\/a> exchanges barbs in the latest presidential debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ms Connolly said her opponents were making false accusations about her instead of having a \u201creal debate\u201d about the presidency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">With another poll in the Business Post this morning confirming that Ms Connolly enjoys a significant lead in the race, Ms Humphreys struck a more combative tone in a debate on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\/\">RT\u00c9 Radio<\/a>, directly addressing Ms Connolly with questions about a series of issues that have followed her throughout the first half of the campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ms Connolly accused Fine Gael of following the advice by former minister Ivan Yates, who advised the party in a podcast to \u201csmear\u201d her. Ms Humphreys denied the charge, saying that Mr Yates has nothing to do with her campaign, adding that he has as much to do with her campaign as Joe Brolly \u2013 who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/10\/joe-brolly-video-depicting-sex-act-by-presidential-candidate-is-misogynistic-heather-humphreys-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/10\/joe-brolly-video-depicting-sex-act-by-presidential-candidate-is-misogynistic-heather-humphreys-says\/\">apologised on Friday for a lewd intervention<\/a> about the presidential race \u2013 had with Ms Connolly\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Afterwards, Ms Connolly said while Ms Humphreys had said she was not involved in any smear campaign, \u201cactually today there was a lot of allegations against me without any basis whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">From the outset Ms Humphreys sought to take the fight to her opponent, reopening questions about controversies that her campaign has encountered in recent weeks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said that Ms Connolly had \u201cinsulted\u201d Germany, France, the UK and the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat doesn\u2019t go without consequence. If you are a president of this country, you have the meet other leaders,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd how are you going to speak to talk to them, will they want to talk to you?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ms Connolly said she was speaking out in the context of a \u201cgenocide\u201d in Gaza and said Ireland\u2019s neutrality was the key to being able ask questions of powerful countries. She said she was a \u201ccommitted European\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Asked by journalists afterwards if she had ever voted in favour of a European treaty, Ms Connolly said that she \u201cprobably\u201d had, but could not say offhand how she had voted in a number of referendums on EU treaties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said she had taken an active role in the campaign against the Lisbon treaty, because of the \u201cmilitary industrial complex and the way we were going\u201d and the \u201cblatant neoliberal ideology that sets out the price of everything and the value of nothing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/people\/2025\/10\/12\/the-most-important-trait-in-a-presidential-candidate-vibes\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The most important trait in a presidential candidate? VibesOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBut I have no recollection of canvassing against any other treaty,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Pressed on how she had voted, Ms Connolly said: \u201cI\u2019d say I voted for them.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In the debate, both candidates promised to speak up for people if elected president. Ms Humphreys said she would \u201cnever be afraid to speak up, to be a voice for the people of this country, to be the conscience of the nation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ms Connolly said she would be a president who was \u201cunafraid to speak out\u201d though she acknowledged that \u201cpolicies are decided by Government\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But she said that people wanted a president who gives them a sense of \u201chope\u201d and \u201creflects their values\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Confronted by the legacy of having served in sometimes unpopular governments, Ms Humphreys said: \u201cIt\u2019s much easier to sit on the opposition benches and give out about everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She defended her record of assisting Lucia O\u2019Farrell, whose son Shane was killed by a hit-and-run driver out on bail and who has since received State apology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019m sorry if Lucia thinks I didn\u2019t do enough,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ms Humphreys said she had \u201cnever objected to a housing development\u201d, while some TDs had.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Asked by journalists afterwards if she had ever objected to housing, Ms Connolly said she had \u201cnever objected to housing\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">But she said: \u201cI might have put in submissions that expressed my concerns, sharing the concerns of residents, that\u2019s over my lifetime in politics &#8230; I certainly shared the concerns of residents in Galway in relation to where certain student accommodation was put.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Asked if that was not an objection in practice, she said: \u201cI think it\u2019s very important to use language properly. I have never objected.
