That meant those spaces were completely blocked to customers who wanted to pull in and support local businesses,” he added.

READ MORE: Silence from mayor as fury builds over Christmas festivities in Limerick

At the October meeting of Newcastle West Municipal District, senior executive engineer John Sheehan said he was recommending the change.

He said it was warranted “in the interests of promoting improved road safety, safe access and egress in existing traffic streams to road users and residents of the surrounding areas.”

Mr Sheehan said the extension of the bye laws “will provide a greater turnover of cars parking to promote the commercial businesses along the N21 national primary route”.

Councillors were told no submissions were received during a public consultation over the summer and that An Garda Siochana have confirmed they have no objection.

Cllr Galvin emphasised that the proposed change came directly from concerns which were raised by local business owners.

“Five businesses approached me about the issue. They were being badly affected because cars were left sitting outside their doors all day. Customers simply couldn’t get near the shops. This by-law means a proper turnover of parking spaces, which will benefit both shoppers and traders.

“This is about fairness and supporting traders,” Cllr. Galvin added. “This is not about penalising people, it’s about keeping Abbeyfeale open and accessible.
