{"id":11998,"date":"2025-08-20T16:58:08","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T16:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/11998\/"},"modified":"2025-08-20T16:58:08","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T16:58:08","slug":"man-left-pedestrian-with-fractured-skull-in-rare-case-of-furious-driving-on-a-bicycle-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/11998\/","title":{"rendered":"Man left pedestrian with fractured skull in \u2018rare case of furious driving\u2019 on a bicycle \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/derry\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/derry\">Derry<\/a> man who left a pedestrian with a fractured skull when he crashed his bicycle into her was handed a six-month suspended prison sentence on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sentencing Shane Coyle (26) at Bishop Street Crown Court, Judge Neill Rafferty said that, despite a legal career spanning more than three decades, \u201cthis is the first time I have encountered the offence of furious driving\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Although his prison sentence is suspended for two years, Coyle, from Kingsmere Gardens in Derry, remains on remand in custody facing drugs charges. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was due to have been sentenced on Tuesday but instead, he was charged with being concerned in the supply of a Class A drug and possessing criminal property. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Wednesday Coyle appeared before the court via video link from HM Prison Maghaberry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Judge Rafferty said Coyle was charged with \u201chaving the charge of a bicycle caused by wilful misconduct bodily harm to be done to\u201d a woman on the Belt Road, Derry, on August 14th, 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The court heard the woman was walking her dog on the footpath when Coyle\u2019s bicycle careened into her from behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cShe was sent to the ground with great force\u201d and sustained serious injuries, including a blood clot on her brain and a fractured skull, said Judge Rafferty, adding that she had to undergo surgery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The victim was rendered unconscious but a passing motorist who saw the collision stopped and gave first aid. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While Coyle held the woman\u2019s dog and his friend called for an ambulance, the motorist moved the woman into the recovery position as she was bleeding from her ear, into her mouth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Coyle was interviewed about the incident and \u201cadmitted colliding with her\u201d, the judge said.
