{"id":120543,"date":"2025-10-14T02:40:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T02:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/120543\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T02:40:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T02:40:10","slug":"twenty-three-romanian-men-with-convictions-removed-from-state-on-chartered-flight-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/120543\/","title":{"rendered":"Twenty three Romanian men with convictions removed from State on chartered flight \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A chartered flight has been used to remove 23 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/romania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/romania\/\">Romanian<\/a> men from the State, all of whom have been associated with criminality. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The forced removal was announced by Minister for Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-ocallaghan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jim-ocallaghan\/\">Jim O\u2019Callaghan<\/a> on Monday. The men were aged between 22 and 49 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">In a statement, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-justice\/\">Department of Justice<\/a> said all those removed had received custodial sentences for a range of offences. All are subject to re-entry bans of 10 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In all, 130 people have now been deported on five chartered flights since the beginning of this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Another 137 were removed on commercial flights. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">More than \u20ac1 million has been spent on the most recent charter flights. The most expensive was a flight that removed 24 men from Ireland to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pakistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pakistan\/\">Pakistan<\/a> in September, which cost \u20ac473,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There were two chartered flights to Georgia and one to Nigeria earlier this year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr O\u2019Callaghan said the right to freedom of movement is among the most fundamental rights and freedoms provided to European citizens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cRestricting the right to freedom of movement is not a measure I take lightly, but there must be consequences if a person\u2019s behaviour means they should no longer be entitled to access this privilege.
