{"id":120862,"date":"2025-10-14T06:46:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T06:46:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/120862\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T06:46:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T06:46:15","slug":"allows-us-to-see-what-human-eyes-cant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/120862\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Allows us to see what human eyes &#8230; can&#8217;t&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Researchers at North Carolina State University have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/matter\/abstract\/S2590-2385(25)00408-4?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS2590238525004084%3Fshowall%3Dtrue\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:published;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">published<\/a> an inquiry into advanced hyperspectral imaging technology as a potential jumping-off point for sorting municipal waste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/matter\/abstract\/S2590-2385(25)00408-4?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS2590238525004084%3Fshowall%3Dtrue\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:study;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">study<\/a>, published in the journal Matter, <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/news\/2025-09-cameras-unseen-smarter-faster-recycling.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:discusses;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">discusses<\/a> the scientists&#8217; use of powerful optical sensors to analyze the wavelengths of light reflected against various materials as conveyed through a pixelated image.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/2025\/09\/how-hyper-detailed-cameras-will-make-recycling-more-efficient\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the researchers;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">the researchers<\/a> explained, while the range of visible wavelengths sits between roughly 400 and 700 nanometers, the entire electromagnetic spectrum <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/news\/2025-09-cameras-unseen-smarter-faster-recycling.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:extends;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">extends<\/a> far beyond that, and hyperspectral imaging can recognize additional wavelengths of up to 2,500 nanometers \u2014 near-infrared and shortwave infrared light.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Hyperspectral imaging is a powerful tool that allows us to see what human eyes or standard cameras can&#8217;t,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/2025\/09\/how-hyper-detailed-cameras-will-make-recycling-more-efficient\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:explained;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">explained<\/a> Lokendra Pal, an E.J. Woody Rice Professor and one of the study&#8217;s co-authors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;With this technology, we can capture real-time images of large quantities of waste, down to the pixel level of data. By doing that, we can identify different materials based on variations in light reflection that we could not normally see.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Through the imaging process, the researchers were able to <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/news\/2025-09-cameras-unseen-smarter-faster-recycling.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:assign;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">assign<\/a> distinct &#8220;spectral fingerprints&#8221; to each material, even distinguishing between those that might contain invisible or near-invisible differences outside of the visible light range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A large body of these &#8220;fingerprints&#8221; can better <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/news\/2025-09-cameras-unseen-smarter-faster-recycling.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:equip;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">equip<\/a> local recycling systems as they sort through municipal waste \u2014 in particular, identifying materials that can be salvaged for various recycling endeavors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling\/national-overview-facts-and-figures-materials#:~:text=20%2C000%2C000%2030%2C000%2C000%2040%2C000%2C000-,Landfilling,generated%20was%20292.4%20million%20tons.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Environmental Protection Agency;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>, only about 30% of municipal solid waste was <a href=\"https:\/\/guide.thecooldown.com\/actions\/know-your-recycling-options\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:recycled;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">recycled<\/a> or composted in the United States in 2018, with another 10% diverted for energy recovery.
