{"id":122,"date":"2025-08-14T01:28:31","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T01:28:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/122\/"},"modified":"2025-08-14T01:28:31","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T01:28:31","slug":"perseid-meteor-shower-to-continue-wednesday-night-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/122\/","title":{"rendered":"Perseid meteor shower to continue Wednesday night \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One of the most eagerly awaited astronomical events of the year \u2013 which promised one or two meteors or \u201cshooting stars\u201d a minute \u2013  is set to continue in Irish skies on Wednesday night. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> Tuesday night saw about 60 meteors an hour darting across the sky and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/astronomy-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/astronomy-ireland\/\">stargazers<\/a> can expect about half that amount on Wednesday night. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/perseids\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/perseids\/\">Perseids<\/a> will be half as strong tonight as they were last night, so that\u2019s still 10 times more meteors tonight than a normal night, so well worth viewing,\u201d said David Moore from astronomy.ie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe best time to view is dusk until dawn,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe had people sending us counts of how many they saw every 15 minutes from 10:30pm last night when it got dark enough to see them. Photograph:  Astronomy Ireland magazine contributor Catherine Conway <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDublin gets much the same view as the rest of the country, indeed, all of Europe,\u201d Mr Moore said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis year the moon is in the sky so even those in the countryside will have moonlit skies so even suburban viewers will get the same view.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/met-eireann\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/met-eireann\/\">Met \u00c9ireann<\/a> has forecast a humid night with clear spells on Wednesday, however a few showers are possible which could be heavy or thundery. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Moore advised stargazers to ensure they are comfortable while looking up. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> \u201cStanding with your neck craned back for hours is not comfortable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cLook anywhere in the sky. If there are clouds look in the clear patches. If totally clear stand with your back to the moon so it does not dazzle you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe paths of the meteors will all point back to the constellation Perseus but you do not have to look at Perseus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Perseid meteors are caused by dust particles shed by the comet Swift-Tuttle. The comet, which takes 133 years to orbit the sun, was last seen in Irish skies in 1992.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At this time of year, Earth moves through this debris cloud, making one of the most celebrated astronomical events and arguably the most predictable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Particles from the debris cloud subsequently burn up on entering Earth\u2019s atmosphere and create flashes of light. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The shower is active for several weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s such a special time of the year,\u201d said astronomer Danielle Wilcox from Blackrock Castle Observatory, Cork.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"A meteor streaks across the sky over West Virginia during the annual Perseid meteor shower in 2021.
