{"id":122873,"date":"2025-10-15T04:32:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T04:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/122873\/"},"modified":"2025-10-15T04:32:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T04:32:12","slug":"two-men-charged-with-tipperary-assault-to-receive-medical-attention-for-mental-health-difficulties-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/122873\/","title":{"rendered":"Two men charged with Tipperary assault to receive medical attention for mental health difficulties \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Two men charged in relation to an incident where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/10\/12\/two-arrested-after-man-suffers-serious-injuries-in-petrol-attack-in-co-tipperary\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2025\/10\/12\/two-arrested-after-man-suffers-serious-injuries-in-petrol-attack-in-co-tipperary\/\">a man was allegedly doused in petrol and set alight<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tipperary\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tipperary\/\">Tipperary<\/a> at the weekend are experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mental-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mental-health\/\">mental health difficulties<\/a> and require medical attention in custody, a court was told today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Luke Caplice (28), with an address at Knockane, Ballylooby, Co Tipperary, and Chad Allen (27) of no fixed abode made their second court appearance in relation to the alleged incident at Knockane, Ballylooby, on Saturday night in which a man  was badly burned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Both men are charged with assault causing harm to the man at Knockane, Ballylooby, on October 11th contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997, arising out of the incident, which has left the injured party in a critical but stable condition in hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Both men are also charged with the theft of \u20ac100 worth of green diesel, \u20ac32 worth of petrol, \u20ac51.59 worth of kerosene,  and two cups of coffee and Red Bull from Top Oil, Cashel Road, Cahir, Co Tipperary, also on October 11th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Caplice is further charged with criminal damage to an Audi A6 car at Cois na hAbhann, Ballyporeen, Co Tipperary, and with using false registration plates on a car at Top Oil, Cashel Road, Cahir, again on October 11th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Both men had been charged in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dungarvan-district-court\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dungarvan-district-court\/\">Dungarvan District Court<\/a> on Monday and remanded in custody to appear at Clonmel District Court on Tuesday where their solicitor, Aidan Leahy, said  both his clients were reserving their position on bail and consenting to a remand in custody.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Judge John O\u2019Leary remanded both men to appear again at Clonmel District Court on October 28th by video link for the Director of Public Prosecutions\u2019 (DPP) directions.  He granted both men free legal aid and assigned Mr Leahy and fellow solicitor John Joy to represent them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Leahy said  both men were suffering from mental health issues, and he asked Judge O\u2019Leary to recommend that they receive all appropriate medical attention while on remand at Limerick Prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Judge O\u2019Leary agreed and recommended that the prison authorities afford both accused appropriate medical attention for their respective mental health problems before adjourning the matter until October 28th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2025\/10\/14\/teenager-sped-down-wrong-side-of-roads-reaching-203kmh-in-garda-chase-court-hears\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Teenager sped down wrong side of roads reaching 203km\/h in garda chase, court hearsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">At the earlier hearing at Dungarvan District Court, Det Garda Conor Gleeson of Cashel Garda station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in relation to Mr Allen.
