{"id":123428,"date":"2025-10-15T10:34:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T10:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/123428\/"},"modified":"2025-10-15T10:34:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T10:34:09","slug":"gardai-target-maximum-disruption-as-e10-5m-of-cocaine-seized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/123428\/","title":{"rendered":"Garda\u00ed target &#8216;maximum disruption&#8217; as \u20ac10.5m of cocaine seized"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Garda\u00ed believe they have taken out a key transportation route for the smuggling of \u201cbulk loads\u201d of cocaine into the country.<\/p>\n<p>One of the tactics being adopted by garda\u00ed is to remove the truck drivers providing transportation services for <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/drugs-crisis_topic-5046371.html\">drug<\/a> smuggling, as it causes \u201cmaximum disruption\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0it not only shuts down a supply route, but also deprives multiple organised crime groups of their product.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Following a lengthy intelligence operation, the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) and Revenue Customs Service, swooped on the driver of an articulated truck after he came off a ferry at Rosslare Port on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They seized 150kg of cocaine, which, according to  Irish Examiner estimates, brings the total amount of cocaine seized so far this year by Garda\u00ed and Customs to more than 1.2 tonnes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Garda\u00ed and Customs have placed a final estimated street value of the cocaine seized on Monday at \u20ac10.5m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Security sources said the operation was not aimed at the drug gangs due to receive the cocaine, but rather to take out the route and target the haulier involved in the regular transport of \u201cbulk loads\u201d of cocaine into the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Revealing the sophistication of \u201cdeep concealments\u201d, customs officers and garda\u00ed found around 50 wrapped three-kilo bags of cocaine inside a lead-lined container that was concealed inside one of the massive fuel tanks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The lead lining is to bypass any X-ray scanner, and being surrounded in fuel protects against drug detector dogs identifying it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Sources said these concealments have to be created by deconstructing fuel tanks, placing the lead container inside and welding and bolting the tank back together.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/4820973_6_articleinline_IRISH_20Drugs_20_2019105830.jpg\" alt=\"A lead-lined compartment which contained drugs worth \u20ac10.5m. Picture: An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na\/PA\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The truck driver is a Bulgarian national who has been under surveillance by authorities for some time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBy targeting the logistics, the driver of the trucks transporting the drugs across Europe into Ireland, it is maximising the disruption on organised crime groups,\u201d a security source said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cDrug traffickers can\u2019t work on their own, they need legitimate truck drivers to transport their product.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Garda\u00ed have taken out a number of logistic operators in the last year or so, including a veteran cross-border truck driver and another major haulier in the South-East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Sources said the authorities want the message to go out to the haulage industry that anyone providing transport services to drug traffickers could serve lengthy prison sentences if they are caught.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The 150kg cocaine haul comes less than a week after 110kg of cocaine was seized by a divisional crime unit in South Dublin \u2014 the Terenure Serious Crime Unit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">These two consignments are the largest hauls of cocaine since the summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Last July, 440kg of cocaine was seized in Courtmacsherry, Co Cork, by the Joint Task Force (Garda, Revenue, and Defence Forces).
