China, once the largest buyer of U.S. soybeans, continues to boycott purchases from the U.S. as President Donald Trump\u2019s trade tit-for-tat escalates.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s trade war with China has pushed the U.S. soybean market into a tailspin, after purchasing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/gallery\/2025\/10\/14\/us-soya-bean-farmers-battered-by-trade-dispute-with-china\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/gallery\/2025\/10\/14\/us-soya-bean-farmers-battered-by-trade-dispute-with-china\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/gallery\/2025\/10\/14\/us-soya-bean-farmers-battered-by-trade-dispute-with-china\" aria-label=\"half of America\u2019s $24.5 billion soybean crop\">half of America\u2019s $24.5 billion soybean crop<\/a> last year\u2014mostly to feed the country\u2019s pigs. But without any purchases from China all year, <strong>soybean prices are falling and storage could become scarce<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of that distress, the Trump Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-farmers-aid-china-trade-war.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-farmers-aid-china-trade-war.html\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-farmers-aid-china-trade-war.html\" aria-label=\"said it would spend tens of billions\">said it would spend tens of billions<\/a> to support these farmers, but that <strong>aid has been pushed back indefinitely due to the government shutdown<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/farmers-trump-trade-war-bailout-harvest\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/farmers-trump-trade-war-bailout-harvest\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.wpr.org\/news\/farmers-trump-trade-war-bailout-harvest\" aria-label=\"Wisconsin Public Radio reports\">Wisconsin Public Radio reports<\/a>. Republicans have estimated that U.S. soybean farmers need as much as $50 billion. That\u2019d be more than double what was given to farmers during Trump\u2019s first term trade war in 2018 when China levied reciprocal tariffs on U.S. soybeans and, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-farmers-aid-china-trade-war.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-farmers-aid-china-trade-war.html\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-farmers-aid-china-trade-war.html\" aria-label=\"the New York Times reports\">the New York Times reports<\/a>, \u201cthe fallout was so painful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic National Committee is also picking up on the discontent, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/weekly-agriculture\/2025\/10\/14\/dems-soybean-blitz-00606913\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/weekly-agriculture\/2025\/10\/14\/dems-soybean-blitz-00606913\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/weekly-agriculture\/2025\/10\/14\/dems-soybean-blitz-00606913\" aria-label=\"Politico\u2019s Morning Ag notes\">Politico\u2019s Morning Ag notes<\/a> that this week the party is rolling out \u201ca five-figure ad campaign that will target a dozen red Midwestern districts on YouTube TV and other streaming services\u201d ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UErkSnIL0vw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UErkSnIL0vw\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UErkSnIL0vw\" aria-label=\"30-second video\">30-second video<\/a> showcases Illinois soybean farmer John Bartman, who talks about the realities of how tariffs are impacting his livelihood, and says: \u201c<strong>We don\u2019t want a bailout. We want a market.<\/strong> Bailouts are band-aids. What he is doing is destroying our markets. And when those markets disappear, we are not going to get them back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The impact is starting to be felt in other places, too. Take what\u2019s happened in the local housing markets of Des Moines, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. Real estate aggregator Redfin\u2019s data shows that <strong>two out of five homes for sale in those areas <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/darylfairweather_american-soybean-farmers-are-facing-significant-activity-7378476796096233472-itFj?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAA0FjckBKuzrjSGBbKPyHN-nLEGY_N6ce24\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/darylfairweather_american-soybean-farmers-are-facing-significant-activity-7378476796096233472-itFj?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAA0FjckBKuzrjSGBbKPyHN-nLEGY_N6ce24\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/darylfairweather_american-soybean-farmers-are-facing-significant-activity-7378476796096233472-itFj?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAA0FjckBKuzrjSGBbKPyHN-nLEGY_N6ce24\" aria-label=\"have experienced a price drop\"><strong data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/darylfairweather_american-soybean-farmers-are-facing-significant-activity-7378476796096233472-itFj?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAA0FjckBKuzrjSGBbKPyHN-nLEGY_N6ce24\">have experienced a price drop<\/strong><\/a>\u2014which is roughly double the national rate. Witnesses said Israeli troops fired heavy barrages to keep crowds from moving before the sites\u2019 opening or from leaving designated roads. Once at the sites, thousands of aid-seekers scrambled in a mad rush to get to food boxes. The Gaza Health Ministry says more than 2,500 people were killed and hundreds more wounded seeking aid, either on route to GHF sites or when Israeli troops fired as crowds massed waiting for U.N. aid trucks entering Gaza.
