It used a controlled online experiment run in July 2024 to test two types of \u201ceco-\u00adlabels\u201d on a sample of 1,200 adults, who were shopping in an online store offering real products, brands and prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Participants were given a budget between \u20ac180 and \u20ac540 and instructed to shop as if they were making real online purchases, as some of them would be randomly selected to receive their chosen clothes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">In one version of the store, participants saw a simple label that was applied only to the most sustainable products, based on existing EU policy. In another, they saw a colour-\u00adcoded A to E \u201ceco-score\u201d label applied to all products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Both types of labels increased the number of sustainable clothes purchased. However, the eco-score \u00adlabel was twice as effective among the study participants.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop5 indo-26838ee5_paddingbottom3 indo-26838ee5_paddingleft7 indo-26838ee5_paddingright5 indo-26838ee5_paddingtop3 indo-b184cee3_openquote\" style=\"border-left-color:var(--color-primary-base);border-left-style:solid;border-left-width:0\" data-testid=\"inline-quote\">\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-91174671_secondary indo-66f0fec7_medium indo-1d70522a_marginbottom0\" style=\"color:var(--color-black-base)\">Many consumers want to make more sustainable choices<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Compared with those who saw no labels, participants who encountered the simple label chose 10pc more sustainable items, while those who saw the eco-score label chose 20pc more sustainable items and were more than twice as likely to buy only from the most sustainable brands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cMany consumers want to make more sustainable choices, but they need clear and trustworthy information at the point of sale,\u201d Dr Timmons, of the ESRI, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cWhile buying fewer clothes or second-hand options are often the most sustainable actions, eco-labels can help shoppers make more informed choices when buying new and help more sustainable brands stand out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Labels that reveal the environmental impact of clothing help shoppers choose sustainable options.
