{"id":12653,"date":"2025-08-20T23:54:06","date_gmt":"2025-08-20T23:54:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/12653\/"},"modified":"2025-08-20T23:54:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T23:54:06","slug":"its-staying-home-uk-raises-3-8-million-to-keep-rare-barbara-hepworth-sculpture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/12653\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s staying home: UK raises \u00a33.8 million to keep rare Barbara Hepworth sculpture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n         Published on<br \/>\n            20\/08\/2025 &#8211; 11:23 GMT+2\n            <\/p>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n          ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>The UK has raised \u00a33.8 million (approx. \u20ac4.4 million) to save a rare sculpture by British artist Barbara Hepworth for the nation,The Hepworth Wakefield art museum said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Hepworth\u2019s 1943 \u2018Sculpture with Colour (Oval Form) Pale Blue and Red\u2019 will enter the UK\u2019s national collection and go on permanent public display at The Hepworth Wakefield, in her West Yorkshire hometown.<\/p>\n<p>Born in 1903, Barbara Hepworth was one of the leading and pioneering figures of British <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2024\/04\/17\/paris-centre-pompidou-gives-modern-sculptor-constantin-brancusi-his-biggest-show-yet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Modernism<\/strong><\/a> throughout the first half of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>Her \u2018Sculpture with Colour (Oval Form) Pale Blue and Red\u2019 \u201cmarks a breakthrough in Hepworth\u2019s career,\u201d The Hepworth Wakefield said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>She created the piece at the height of World War II after she settled with her family in St. Ives, Cornwall. She remained there until her death in 1975.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is one of only a handful of wooden carvings made by Hepworth during the 1940s, and one of the first major wood carvings she made using strings.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She went on to produce a series of notable stringed and colourful sculptures.<\/p>\n<p>English art collector Helen Sutherland first bought the piece directly from the artist in 1944. It remained privately owned and mostly shielded from public view ever since.<\/p>\n<p>The artwork was most recently sold to a private collector at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/02\/11\/christies-to-host-groundbreaking-auction-featuring-only-ai-art\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Christie\u2019s auction<\/strong><\/a> in March 2024 in London.
