The years-long overhaul project was spearheaded by a group of predominantly Native curators, with contemporary works appearing next to historical pieces\u2014some of them more than 1,000 years old. The galleries will also feature recent acquisitions, as well as new works specially commissioned for the occasion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cThe re-conceived Arts of Indigenous America galleries embody our ongoing commitment to building lasting collaborative partnerships with Indigenous communities to better care for and share our collections,\u201d Thomas P. Campbell, the director and chief executive of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (which oversees the de Young and Legion of Honor museums), said in a statement. \u201cThe Bay Area has long been an axis for Indigenous activism, and we are proud that this project honours that legacy by centring the voices of our Indigenous partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The new display replaces an exhibition of Native American art that had been on view since 2017. Two galleries were fully re-envisioned by five curators\u2014Joseph Aguilar, Meyokeeskow Marrufo, Hillary C. The <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-blue-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.famsf.org\/exhibitions\/rooted-california-native-art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">first of these<\/a> zooms in on the Hupa, Karuk, Tolowa, Wiyot and Yurok communities of northwestern California (until 6 December 2026). The second gallery widens its scope to all of North America. Ceramics, textiles, paintings, beadwork, carvings, works on paper and basketry are arranged thematically alongside special commissions by <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2024\/05\/02\/it-is-a-conversation-youre-having-with-your-loom-melissa-cody-on-her-lifelong-relationship-with-weaving\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Melissa Cody<\/a> and <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2024\/02\/26\/the-things-we-make-are-time-machines-cannupa-hanska-luger-on-his-pst-art-exhibitions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cannupa Hanska Luger<\/a>, among other contemporary artists. <\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The museum specifically contacted the communities from which the historical pieces on view originate, asking permission to display them\u2014now a requirement under the <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2024\/01\/29\/us-museums-nagpra-native-american-displays-new-regulations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act<\/a>\u2014and inviting members to consult on their interpretation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The two remaining Arts of Indigenous America galleries at the de Young\u2014dedicated to Ancestral Maya art and mural fragments from Teotihuacan\u2014have also been \u201crefreshed\u201d, according to the museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Soon after the galleries reopen, the de Young will present its first solo exhibition by a contemporary Indigenous artist, <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-blue-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.famsf.org\/exhibitions\/rose-b-simpson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rose B. Simpson: Lexicon<\/a> (30 August\u20132 August 2026).
