During a search of a property in Co Carlow, garda\u00ed discovered a viable pipe bomb (stock image)<\/p>\n

A home in Co Carlow was evacuated on Thursday afternoon and two men arrested following the discovery of a \u201cviable\u201d pipe bomb.<\/p>\n

Garda\u00ed carried out a search warrant at a house in Kernanstown in the Bennekerry area of Co Carlow on Thursday afternoon, October 16, where a suspected pipe bomb was subsequently found.<\/p>\n

Garda\u00ed say it is unknown at this time how long the device had been at this location.<\/p>\n

The occupants of the house were evacuated by garda\u00ed with a cordon established around the property and the assistance of the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit was requested.<\/p>\n

The pipe bomb was found to be \u201cviable\u201d and was safely removed from the house by the EOD unit overnight for further examination and for a controlled explosion to be conducted.<\/p>\n

A quantity of suspected benzodiazepine tablets were also seized during the search, pending analysis.<\/p>\n

Garda\u00ed have preserved the scene in order to carry out further searches of the property.<\/p>\n

The cordon has been lifted and the area declared safe.<\/p>\n
