{"id":128290,"date":"2025-10-17T15:37:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T15:37:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/128290\/"},"modified":"2025-10-17T15:37:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T15:37:10","slug":"recalibrating-global-pacts-piyush-goyal-signals-clear-shift-away-from-competitor-countries-in-indias-fta-agenda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/128290\/","title":{"rendered":"Recalibrating global pacts: Piyush Goyal signals clear shift away from competitor countries in India&#8217;s FTA agenda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government is steering clear of free trade agreements (FTAs) with countries that directly compete with Indian industry and instead is focusing on countries that complement India\u2019s economic priorities, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCountries that come to India with products, goods, and services that straight away impact our own businesses, we have stopped all those types of engagements,\u201d Goyal said, addressing industry leaders at an Assocham event.<\/p>\n<p>The minister\u2019s remarks underline a recalibration of India\u2019s trade priorities after it walked out of the China-backed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in 2019, a move Goyal described as \u201ca bold decision that saved Indian industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also Read<\/strong> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/india\/india-brazil-trade-india-brazil-ties-piyush-goyal-brazil-india-brazil-business-dialogue-11760616513362.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">India, Brazil agree to expand trade partnership; Goyal calls for stronger ties<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The expansive trade liberalization will shift toward a strategy rooted in protecting national interests and building partnerships that complement, not compete with, India\u2019s economic priorities.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, India is forging trade partnerships that complement its domestic economy, Goyal said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at the FTAs we have done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia gives us coking <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/industry\/renewables-beat-coal-in-power-generation-but-iea-says-global-2030-climate-goal-remains-out-of-reach-here-is-why-11759925605409.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"coal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">coal<\/a>&#8230;.and they opened their doors for a lot of our products, automobiles, and students,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The minister also highlighted the recently concluded <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/economy\/india-european-union-free-trade-agreement-trade-deal-textile-exports-11760591090018.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"FTA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">FTA<\/a> with the European Free Trade Association, comprising Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, as a model of mutually beneficial trade.<\/p>\n<p>Goyal said that India was not part of RCEP\u2019s original framework of Asean, Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and China, but joined negotiations in 2011 without clear reasoning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also Read<\/strong> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/economy\/exploring-new-trade-opportunities-piyush-goyal-canadian-trade-minister-maninder-sidhu-hold-discussions-11760203205399.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">India, Canada trade ministers hold discussions to strengthen economic ties<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notably, Goyal did not comment on the ongoing US tariffs or India\u2019s negotiations with the US, maintaining a measured stance on sensitive bilateral discussions.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, pointed to the previous government\u2019s experience with China, when India\u2019s trade deficit ballooned from under $2 billion to nearly $48 billion between 2004 and 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite that, they (UPA government) were looking at doing a trade agreement with China (in the form of RCEP),\u201d Goyal said.
