{"id":129785,"date":"2025-10-18T08:05:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-18T08:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/129785\/"},"modified":"2025-10-18T08:05:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-18T08:05:09","slug":"support-for-fianna-fail-slumps-while-martins-rating-falls-significantly-new-poll-shows-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/129785\/","title":{"rendered":"Support for Fianna F\u00e1il slumps while Martin\u2019s rating falls significantly, new poll shows \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Support for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\">Fianna F\u00e1il <\/a>has slumped while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\">Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin\u2019s <\/a>personal rating has fallen by 11 percentage points to its lowest level in more than five years, according to the latest Irish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/poll\/\">Times\/Ipsos B&amp;A opinion poll<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\">the presidential election campaign <\/a>intensifies in advance of polling day next Friday, the political fallout from the withdrawal of Fianna F\u00e1il candidate Jim Gavin, and the commanding lead enjoyed by left-wing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/presidential-election\/\">candidate Catherine Connolly<\/a>, is continuing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Support for Sinn F\u00e9in has jumped, while Mary Lou McDonald is now the most popular party leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The state of the parties, when undecided voters and those unlikely to vote are excluded, is: Fianna F\u00e1il on 17 per cent (down five), Sinn F\u00e9in on 27 per cent (up five), and Fine Gael on 18 per cent (up one).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/10\/18\/combined-support-for-fianna-fail-and-fine-gael-at-historic-low\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Combined support for Fianna F\u00e1il and Fine Gael at historic lowOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Among the smaller parties, the Social Democrats are at 5 per cent (down one), Labour is on 6 per cent (up two), the Green Party is at 3 per cent (no change), People Before Profit-Solidarity is on 2 per cent (no change), Aont\u00fa is on 3 per cent (up one) and Independent Ireland is on 2 per cent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Independents\/others are at 17 per cent. This is the first poll that Independent Ireland support has been separated out from Independents and others. The comparisons are with the most recent Irish Times\/Ipsos poll in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Undecided voters \u2013 who are excluded from the above figures \u2013 are at 23 per cent, a decline of 2 points since July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Satisfaction with the Government is down by 5 points to 31 per cent. But the most significant movement is for the Fianna F\u00e1il leader; Mr Martin sees his satisfaction rating plummet by 11 points to 33 per cent, his lowest rating since early 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The Fine Gael leader Simon Harris sees his rating drop by three points to 35 per cent, while Ms McDonald increases by three points to 39 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">There is some consolation for Mr Martin when respondents were asked if he should have resigned after Mr Gavin ceased his presidential campaign. A clear majority (51 per cent) said he should not have resigned, while less than a third of voters (32 per cent) said he should have gone.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Poll October 2025\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/6ZJXXDP77ZCFBJFFLBX4BOFISM.png\"   width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Source: Ipsos B&amp;A <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Mr Martin is strongly backed by Fianna F\u00e1il voters, 79 per cent of whom said he should not resign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Voters are also overwhelmingly convinced that the Republic is going in the wrong direction. Just 35 per cent said the State is \u201cgenerally moving in the right direction\u201d. That is down seven points since the question was last asked a year ago, while 55 per cent said things are going in the wrong direction, an increase of 5 points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The figures mean combined support for Fianna F\u00e1il and Fine Gael, at 35 per cent, is at a historic low.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The poll was conducted among a representative sample of adults aged 18 years and upwards across 120 sampling points throughout all constituencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Unlike most other opinion polls, The Irish Times\/Ipsos B&amp;A series is conducted through face-to-face sampling. Personal in-home interviewing took place on October 12th, 13th and 14th.
