Only 27 percent said the economy was \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cexcellent,\u201d while 72 percent described it as \u201cfair\u201d or \u201cpoor.\u201d Just 32 percent expected the economy to improve next year, the lowest level since March 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The downturn coincided with a government shutdown that began more than two weeks ago. His tariff policies also fared poorly, with 41 percent approving and 56 percent disapproving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The slump deepened from April, when a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/19\/trumps-approval-rating-on-economy-drops-to-lowest-of-his-presidential-careerat-.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:CNBC poll;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">CNBC poll<\/a> recorded 43 percent approval and 55 percent disapproval on the economy\u2014the first time Trump went net negative on economic performance while president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cDonald Trump was reelected specifically to improve the economy, and so far, people are not liking what they\u2019re seeing,\u201d Jay Campbell partner with Hart Associates, the Democratic pollster for the survey, told the news outlet in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Daily Beast has contacted the White House for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/government-site-blaming-shutdown-on-radical-left-sparks-furious-backlash\/#user-comments\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:shutdown began on Oct. 1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">shutdown began on Oct. 1<\/a> after Republican spending proposals failed to secure the 60 votes needed to get through the Senate and the White House rejected Democrat demands for increased spending on health care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">With no government funding deal in place, hundreds of thousands of federal employees deemed nonessential by the White House were told they would work without pay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/cnn-guest-rips-dementia-addled-104128427.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:shutdown;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\">shutdown <\/a>will continue until Congress reaches a deal on a funding bill.
