EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) – A sea of signs, smiles, and sneakers filled Ascarate Park in central El Paso early Saturday morning, as more than a thousand El Pasoans stepped out in support of mental health awareness at this year’s NAMIWalks El Paso. <\/p>\n
The annual event is organized by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) El Paso, widely recognized as the largest mental health advocacy resource in the borderland.<\/p>\n
The event hosted community members, local leaders, and advocacy groups that all took part in this year’s national theme, “Mental Health for All”.<\/p>\n
“It’s inspiring to see this many people walking side by side,” said Isidrio Torres, Executive Director of NAMI El Paso. “For anyone who may be struggling, this shows they’re not alone.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Participants gathered near the Fiesta Area for check-in, followed by an opening ceremony and an eventual walk around the park. <\/p>\n
The event also included resource tents from local organizations offering information about mental health services in the borderland.<\/p>\n
According to organizers, NAMIWalks El Paso is part of a larger nationwide initiative designed to raise awareness about mental health and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illnesses. <\/p>\n
Funds raised through the event support NAMI El Paso’s free education and advocacy programs. Event organizers say that attendance has grown steadily over the years, and they plan to continue expanding outreach efforts.<\/p>\n
