The biggest rock albums of the 21st Century have been revealed. Find out what they are below.<\/p>\n
To celebrate National Album Day, which took place on Saturday (October 18), Official Charts have released a list of the 40 biggest-selling rock and metal studio albums released in the 21st century.<\/p>\n
Topping the list is Green Day<\/a>\u2018s 2004 \u2018American Idiot<\/a>\u2018, which has sold over 2.6million UK chart units, based on combined UK sales and streams, in the 21 years since its release.<\/p>\n Responding to the news, the band said: \u201cWe made \u2018American Idiot\u2019 as a deeply human statement of defiance \u2013 against fear, against lies, against apathy. But also a character driven concept album.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was risky, it was loud, it was personal \u2013 and it changed everything for us,\u201d they continued \u201cTwenty years later, the fact that it still resonates means the world and we\u2019re very proud that it continues to inspire people everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s followed by Linkin Park<\/a>\u2018s 2000 debut album, \u2018Hybrid Theory<\/a>\u2018, in second place, which has sold over 2million chart units, and The Darkness<\/a>\u2018s 2003 LP \u2018Permission To Land<\/a>\u2018 in third with over 1.45million units.<\/p>\n In fourth place is Evanescence<\/a>\u2018s \u2018Fallen\u2019, which has sold 1.35million units, followed by Muse<\/a>\u2018s 2006 fourth studio album \u2018Black Holes & Revelations<\/a>\u2018 (1.22million units).<\/p>\n See the full top 10 \u2013 with links to NME\u2018s reviews \u2013 below.<\/p>\n Muse and Foo Fighters<\/a> each claim four albums in the Top 40, while Nickelback have three. Five bands have two albums in the list: Blink-182<\/a>, Green Day, Linkin Park, Paramore<\/a> and My Chemical Romance.<\/p>\n In other news, Green Day recently took a jab at US President<\/a> Donald Trump<\/a> while performing at Ohana Festival.<\/p>\n Armstrong and co. have long been vocal critics of Trump and his policies. Early in June, the frontman\u00a0took to social media to speak out against Trump\u2019s authorising of ICE raids<\/a>\u00a0across Los Angeles: \u201cFuck off.\u201d Less than two weeks later, Green Day\u00a0slammed Trump and Elon Musk at their Download Festival headline set<\/a>, asking the crowd to call Trump a \u201cfat bastard\u201d, also telling them: \u201cLadies and gentlemen, we are slipping into fascism\u2026 it\u2019s up to us to fight back!\u201d<\/p>\n While performing on Independence Day (July 4), Armstrong led chants of \u201cFuck Donald Trump\u201d, just hours after Trump\u00a0signed his much-criticised One Big Beautiful Bill into law<\/a>.<\/p>\n Elsewhere, Green Day recently shared the first trailer for their new road trip comedy film\u00a0New Years Rev<\/a>.\u00a0The film was first announced back in February<\/a>, with\u00a0Variety<\/a>\u00a0reporting at the time that it was a road trip comedy produced by all three band members and directed by Lee Kirk.\u00a0The band then put out a casting call for the film<\/a>, asking for \u201cpunks, emo, hardcore, alternative and rocker young adults\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The biggest rock albums of the 21st Century have been revealed.
