More than 2,500 companies received increased reporting of problems, according to the website.<\/p>\n<p>The outage was another reminder of how  consumers, businesses and even government organizations rely on AWS and its massive cloud to make their websites, apps and other online services work. <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know about the AWS outage.<\/p>\n<p>What is Amazon Web Services?<\/p>\n<p>Amazon Web Services provides cloud computing services to millions of customers that include companies and organizations across various sectors such as technology, entertainment, government, education and financial services.<\/p>\n<p>The cloud provider offers more than 200 services, enabling businesses to store data, host websites and access computing power. Businesses pay Amazon based on the consumption of these services  so they don\u2019t have to own and maintain data centers and servers themselves.<\/p>\n<p>AWS captured about 30% of the global cloud infrastructure market in the second quarter of this year, ahead of its rivals Microsoft and Google, according to data from <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.srgresearch.com\/articles\/q2-cloud-market-nears-100-billion-milestone-and-its-still-growing-by-25-year-over-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Synergy Research Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>How did the outage affect businesses that rely on AWS?<\/p>\n<p>Since businesses rely on AWS, the outage meant that users had trouble using various services, including Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite and Signal, according to DownDetector. People even ran into issues accessing Amazon products such as its Alexa smart speaker and Ring doorbell cameras.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase, a cryptocurrency exchange, posted on social media site X that some users couldn\u2019t access the company\u2019s online platform because of the AWS outage but that \u201call funds are safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Airlines such as <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/20\/amazon-web-services-outage-hits-airline-websites-other-major-sites.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">United and Delta<\/a> also experienced disruptions with customers reporting they couldn\u2019t check their reservations or check in bags.<\/p>\n<p>As companies dealt with the outage, Elon Musk took a jab at AWS by posting \u201cX works\u201d on the social media site he owns.<\/p>\n<p>What caused the outage?<\/p>\n<p>AWS started reporting issues shortly after midnight Pacific  time, stating it was looking into errors with its database service Amazon DynamoDB.<\/p>\n<p>By 8:43 a.m. PT, Amazon said it had \u201cnarrowed down the source of the network connectivity issues that impacted AWS Services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe root cause is an underlying internal subsystem responsible for monitoring the health of our network load balancers,\u201d the company said on its <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/health.aws.amazon.com\/health\/status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">health dashboard<\/a>. More than 90 AWS services were affected by the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Rob Jardin, chief digital officer at cybersecurity company NymVPN, told media outlets <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/20\/amazon-web-services-outage-takes-down-major-websites.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CNBC<\/a> and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/20\/tech\/aws-why-internet-outages-keep-happening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CNN<\/a> in a statement that \u201cthere\u2019s no sign that this AWS outage was caused by a cyberattack \u2014 it looks like a technical fault affecting one of Amazon\u2019s main data centres.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese issues can happen when systems become overloaded or a key part of the network goes down, and because so many websites and apps rely on AWS, the impact spreads quickly,\u201d he said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>An Amazon spokesperson said it\u2019s sharing updates on its health dashboard and didn\u2019t have an additional comment.<\/p>\n<p>Have AWS outages happened before?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, AWS outages have occurred before, including briefly in 2023, because of different reasons, such as human error.<\/p>\n<p>One major <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/amazon-outage-disrupts-lives-surprising-people-about-their-cloud-dependency-11638972001?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqfJxvyQ7e9D-jdoHdcnOCg_0MTzVKFH5V1D6Q5w48dxUanBWwJcBHaX0br4Kc8%3D&amp;gaa_ts=68f64c0e&amp;gaa_sig=GLPr160MmP11Mw1k2TEyLmFM6FveNUBAClGrIqFVgMjgWMkTphv9ewpc6J_Nse0Xqt-EHogUepGsNx8LzBAbVA%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AWS<\/a> outage happened in 2021, bringing down popular websites and services, disrupting the use of products such as vacuum cleaners and cat-food dispensers.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, an <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2017\/03\/03\/518322734\/amazon-and-the-150-million-typo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">employee<\/a> typed the wrong command during a debugging procedure, resulting in the shutdown of more servers than expected.
