Over a year after it was first announced, Channel 9<\/a>\u2019s brand new reality show The Golden Bachelor<\/a>\u00a0finally premiered on Monday night. The series, which was hugely popular in the US, follows 61-year-old widower Barry \u2018Bear\u2019 Myrden<\/a> as he dates a group of 20 mature-aged women in the hopes of finding love for a second time.<\/p>\n

The Golden Bachelor is also hosted by Samantha Armytage<\/a>, who recently told Yahoo Lifestyle that she believes the show is \u201cabsolutely going to resonate with Australians\u201d on an emotional level. While viewers took to social media during the episode to praise the women and their moving backstories, many people said they thought it was \u201cstrange\u201d that Australia\u2019s first Golden Bachelor is originally from Canada.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is the Australian Golden Bachelor NOT AUSTRALIAN?\u201d one person wrote, while another agreed, \u201cI actually thought the same thing. They couldn’t find an Aussie?\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, love him. I\u2019m sure he\u2019s a great man\u2026 but why have we got a Canadian as the Aussie Golden Bachelor?\u201d a third shared.<\/p>\n

\u201cClearly the producers think we don’t have any polished suave Australian men in Australia,\u201d a different user remarked.<\/p>\n

\u201cGolden Bachelor Australia, so they have an American\/Canadian speaking guy,\u201d someone else commented in reference to his strong accent.<\/p>\n

However, others pointed out that Bear has been in Australia for over 20 years and raised his three sons here, and he very much deserves to find love following his wife\u2019s passing 14 years ago from cancer.<\/p>\n

Bear told Yahoo Lifestyle at the show\u2019s launch event on Monday that he only gave one \u2018dealbreaker\u2019 to producers before they began casting the women.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only thing pre-shoot we talked about was I said that I\u2019m active and I like sport and I like skiing and sailing, so it would have to be someone who can keep up with me, and I think the producers did a great job,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said other than that, you get beautiful women all shapes and sizes \u2014 you\u2019ve just got to put yourself out there, it\u2019s not too late.\u201d<\/p>\n

Does Bear find love on the show?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bear remained tight-lipped when asked about his current relationship status, but said that he was sure to follow the advice former Bachelor Matty \u2018J\u2019 Johnson<\/a> offered him at the 2025 Logies.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe just said ‘Follow your heart’, and that\u2019s what I did and I made the right decision,\u201d he teased.<\/p>\n

The Golden Bachelor<\/strong> airs Monday and Tuesday on Channel 9 and 9Now at 7:30pm<\/strong><\/p>\n
