{"id":135550,"date":"2025-10-21T07:30:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T07:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/135550\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T07:30:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T07:30:09","slug":"funeral-delays-feared-as-waterford-hospital-to-end-coroner-requested-autopsies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/135550\/","title":{"rendered":"Funeral delays feared as Waterford hospital to end coroner-requested autopsies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Up to 700 coroner-requested autopsies conducted each year in Waterford are under threat from January, with lengthy delays expected in returning bodies to families for funerals.<\/p>\n<p>Consultant pathologists at University Hospital Waterford will withdraw from conducting coroner-requested autopsies at the morgue in the hospital from January 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It is unknown who will supply the service thereafter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Coroner-requested autopsies include deaths which may be suspicious, accidental, or unexpected, as well as maternal deaths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In a letter to Tipperary South Fine Gael TD Michael Murphy, University Hospital Waterford chief executive Ben O\u2019Sullivan said the hospital told the Department of Justice last November that the consultant pathologists at the hospital \u201cwould not be in a position to provide coroner-requested postmortems from January 2026\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He added: \u201cIn a recent workforce planning exercise, the Department of Justice, in conjunction with the Faculty of Pathology, Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, have indicated that the coroner\u2019s postmortem workload in University Hospital Waterford requires four whole-time equivalent pathologists dedicated uniquely to this service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He said the hospital is \u201ccurrently significantly understaffed\u201d in terms of consultant pathologists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He said HSE diagnostic workloads indicate a need for 18 whole-time equivalent surgical pathologists.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/4828602_11_articleinline_Fine_20Gael_20-_20plinth_2016.jpg\" alt=\"Tipperary South Fine Gael TD Michael Murphy said he is aware of a situation where the family of a young child had to wait for five days for the body to be released because of an autopsy delay.\u00a0File picture: Sam Boal\/Collins\" title=\"Tipperary South Fine Gael TD Michael Murphy said he is aware of a situation where the family of a young child had to wait for five days for the body to be released because of an autopsy delay.\u00a0File picture: Sam Boal\/Collins\" class=\"card-img\"\/>Tipperary South Fine Gael TD Michael Murphy said he is aware of a situation where the family of a young child had to wait for five days for the body to be released because of an autopsy delay.\u00a0File picture: Sam Boal\/Collins<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr O\u2019Sullivan said the laboratory has six consultants, with recruitment ongoing for a three further staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">However, the hospital has twice been unsuccessful in recruiting for the laboratory, \u201clargely because of the expected coroner\u2019s postmortem commitments on top of an extremely busy diagnostic service\u201d.
