The creature was so gigantic that it took him over a minute to find it after first spotting its trailing tentacles.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral minutes into the dive, I noticed a long, thin tentacle trailing overhead, stretching far beyond my vision,\u201d says underwater videographer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/roneydives\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Roney<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C_OLrGIvcCb\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a>. \u201cI followed it through the darkness for over a minute before coming upon a giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/jellyfish-guide\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lion\u2019s mane jellyfish<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2025\/10\/Lions-mane-jellyfish-filmed-on-night-dive.jpg\" preload=\"none\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2025\/10\/Lions-mane-jellyfish-filmed-on-night-dive.mp4\"\/>Underwater videographer\u00a0John Roney filmed the huge lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish on a night dive in the Salish Sea \u2013 a marginal sea between the US state of Washington and the\u00a0Canadian province\u00a0of\u00a0British Columbia. Credit: John Roney<\/p>\n<p>His footage shows the enormous jellyfish pulsing through the dark water as marine snow drifts gently downwards behind it. The artful footage lingers on the animal\u2019s brightly coloured tentacles, which &#8220;have these deep, vibrant orange, purple and crimson colours that I love to film,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Lion\u2019s mane jellies are one of the world\u2019s largest species of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/jellyfish-guide\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jellyfish<\/a>\u00a0and they have a nasty\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/deadliest-jellyfish\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sting<\/a>. \u201cFair warning,\u201d says Roney. \u201cThis is a jellyfish you definitely don\u2019t want to touch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2025\/10\/Lions-mane-filmed-on-night-dive.jpg\" preload=\"none\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2025\/10\/Lions-mane-filmed-on-night-dive.mp4\"\/>According to the Guinness World Records, the lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish\u00a0has been estimated to have a maximum weight exceeding one tonne, making it the heaviest jellyfish species in the world.
