{"id":137570,"date":"2025-10-22T04:55:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T04:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/137570\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T04:55:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T04:55:10","slug":"jay-zs-advice-to-kendrick-lamar-revealed-by-tdes-punch-that-stuck-with-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/137570\/","title":{"rendered":"JAY-Z&#8217;s Advice To Kendrick Lamar Revealed By TDE&#8217;s Punch: &#8216;That Stuck With Me&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/artist\/jay-z\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JAY-Z<\/a> once gave Top Dawg Entertainment President Terrence \u201cPunch\u201d Henderson some sage advice concerning <a href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/artist\/kendrick-lamar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kendrick Lamar<\/a>\u2018s career, and those words have \u201cstuck\u201d with him to this day.<\/p>\n<p>During an in-depth sit-down with Elise Not Elise, the record executive was asked if he and the TDE crew had any hesitations about releasing <a class=\"underline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/news\/kendrick-lamar-to-pimp-butterfly-10th-anniversary-review\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">To Pimp a Butterfly<\/a> given how left-field it was compared to Kendrick\u2019s previous projects.<\/p>\n<p>Punch answered by recalling a particularly impactful conversation he had with Hov during a studio session between <a href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/artist\/sza\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SZA<\/a> (who he also manages) and <a href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/artist\/beyonce\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Beyonc\u00e9<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we were working on To Pimp a Butterfly, me and SZA would go to Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s sessions \u2014 [SZA] was writing for her,\u201d he said. \u201cJAY-Z was there every night so I had a chance to talk to him and I told him, \u2018Yo, we\u2019re about to drop this album that\u2019s gonna piss off the whole fanbase.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis response was, \u2018Good, do it n0w so they can\u2019t never put you in a box.\u2019 That stuck with me, for sure. It gave me more confidence like, Yeah, we\u2019re on the right track, for sure \u2026 There are rules that are set, but geniuses know when to break those rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JAY-Z has been a longtime supporter of both Kendrick Lamar and TDE, and even blessed the Compton rapper with a coveted guest verse early on his career.<\/p>\n<p>A few months after the release of <a class=\"underline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/reviews\/kendrick-lamar-good-kid-m-a-a-d-city\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">good kid, m.A.A.d city<\/a> back in 2012 \u2014 a moment that signaled the birth of a modern-day hip-hop icon \u2014 Kendrick and Hov joined forces on a remix of the hit single \u201cBitch, Don\u2019t Kill My Vibe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was definitely [on my wishlist],\u201d Dot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g4-XC2vRu1k\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Sway in the Morning<\/a> shortly after its release. \u201cThat\u2019s the G.O.A.T. Jay is somebody with that much longevity and still can have that skill, and what he put down on there was ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Aftermath signee also recalled a conversation he had with Jigga at the time: \u201cHe said he sees me, in so many words \u2026 He said he really appreciated [good kid, m.A.A.d city] and what I\u2019m doing for the culture, as far as continuing the legacy of putting together a full body of work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat blew me away because I came up listening to Reasonable Doubt \u2014 that\u2019s where I got the antiques of making an album like that from.
