{"id":137659,"date":"2025-10-22T05:51:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T05:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/137659\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T05:51:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T05:51:12","slug":"man-who-burgled-and-attacked-ex-girlfriend-threw-her-grandmothers-ashes-on-fire-court-hears-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/137659\/","title":{"rendered":"Man who burgled and attacked ex-girlfriend, threw her grandmother\u2019s ashes on fire, court hears \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A man has pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and attacking an ex-girlfriend, in which he bit her face and buttocks, and possessing a loaded machine gun at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a victim impact statement, the woman said he had also thrown her beloved late grandmother\u2019s ashes into a fire and sent her a video of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Willie Woodland (31), of Shanabooly Road, Ballynanty, Co Limerick, committed the offences while wanted for breaching the terms of the suspended portion of a six-year sentence for a 2018 firearms conviction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">During one of the unprovoked attacks on the woman, Woodland burgled her home armed with a knife, bit her on the neck, face and back, and stole her phone, Limerick Circuit Criminal Court heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In another attack, he bit her on her buttocks while trying to steal her phone in another jealous rage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Woodland had pleaded guilty to assaulting the woman on two separate occasions: in June and September 2023, as well as aggravated burglary with a knife at the woman\u2019s home, attempted theft and theft of her phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The woman wrote in a victim impact statement that Woodland \u201cmanipulated\u201d her and \u201cisolated\u201d her from her loved ones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said he tried to \u201ccontrol\u201d her even after they split up, which she said forced her to obtain a court protection order against him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe entered my home with vengeance, when we weren\u2019t even still together. He pinned me down and he bit me like I was some sort of animal,\u201d the woman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt was a toxic relationship. He threatened me and my family and said he was going to shoot me dead,\u201d she said, adding that he followed her grandmother with a knife.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Garda&#xED; found a loaded machine gun and 18 rounds of ammunition when they raided Woodland's home\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/JAEOLKY7ZFDHVDXF7DYXQIVBCM.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"600\"\/>Garda\u00ed found a loaded machine gun and 18 rounds of ammunition when they raided Woodland&#8217;s home <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The woman said she had to retreat to a women\u2019s shelter to get away from Woodland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When garda\u00ed raided Woodland\u2019s home on September 3rd, 2024, they found a loaded machine gun, 18 rounds of ammunition, \u20ac1,000 cash and \u20ac6,000 worth of cocaine and cannabis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The seized machine gun was capable of firing 25 rounds in automatic mode. It could also be fired in semi-automatic mode, garda\u00ed told the court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Garda\u00ed said the gun was loaded with 15 rounds when found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">During interviews with garda\u00ed, following his arrest, Woodland identified himself in a Snapchat video he had shared posing with the gun and pulling the trigger when the gun\u2019s magazine clip was empty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Woodland accepted responsibility for the gun and drugs but would not disclose who he had sold him the weapon. He later told garda\u00ed he did not intend to harm anyone with the gun and that he was given \u20ac1,000 to hold it for an unidentified party. The court heard he said he was storing the gun because he felt threatened and feared for his life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Woodland has pleaded guilty to possession of the submachine-gun, ammunition, possession of the drugs for sale or supply, simple possession of the drugs, and a money-laundering charge in respect of the \u20ac1,000 cash seized. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Woodland also pleaded guilty to possessing almost \u20ac10,000 worth of stolen goods that were robbed by others, not him, from homes in Adare and Rathkeale in May 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Woodland committed all of the above offences while on bail and in breach of his suspended sentence for the 2018 firearms offences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Brian McInerney SC accepted his client  was \u201coffending while on bail\u201d.
