Dakota Johnson sure knows what doesn\u2019t work\u2014at least for her\u2014on a movie set. The experience of shooting Madame Web<\/a>, for example, was \u201cabsolutely psychotic<\/a>.\u201d (\u201cThere\u2019s fake explosions going off and someone\u2019s going \u2018explosion!\u2019 and you act like there\u2019s an explosion.\u201d) At least she\u2019ll be able to do things her own way while filming A Tree Is Blue, her forthcoming feature-length directorial debut.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Per Deadline<\/a>, A Tree Is Blue will tell the story of \u201ca young woman on the autism spectrum who breaks free from her overprotective but loving mother in search of freedom, friendship, and a little chaos in the summer after high school graduation.\u201d The project\u2019s screenplay was written by Johnson\u2019s Cha Cha Real Smooth<\/a> co-star Vanessa Burghardt, who is on the spectrum herself. Burghardt is also in talks to star in the film, along with Jessica Alba and Charli xcx, whose upcoming film The Moment<\/a> just got a flashy (literally) teaser<\/a> from A24. The \u201cSympathy Is A Knife\u201d singer will soon be seen in I Want Your Sex, 100 Nights Of Hero, Faces Of Death, Erupcja<\/a>, and a slew of others<\/a>. Alba recently starred in Netflix\u2019s Trigger Warning<\/a>. She\u2019ll also appear in upcoming series Confessions On The 7:45 and spy thriller The Mark.<\/p>\n

Johnson teased the project earlier this summer during a press roundtable at the Czech Republic\u2019s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (via The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>). \u201cI think I will direct a feature, a very small one, hopefully soon,\u201d the Materialists<\/a> actor said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s really close to my heart and very close to (the production company she co-founded) TeaTime. We\u2019re making it with Vanessa Burghardt, who played my daughter in Cha Cha Real Smooth. She\u2019s an incredible autistic actress.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Johnson previously directed the music video for Coldplay\u2019s \u201cCry Cry Cry\u201d and a short film called Loser Baby, she said at the time that she\u2019s \u201calways felt that I\u2019m not ready to direct a feature. I don\u2019t have the confidence.\u201d With Burghardt, however, \u201cI feel very protective, and I know her very well, and\u2026 I just won\u2019t let anybody else do it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
